American Girl Doll Eyelet Dress

Free Doll Dress Knitting Pattern

Skills Required/Techniques Used:

-Knit & purl, cast on & bind off

-Increasing: yarn over (YO), knit front and back (kfr&b)

-Working in the round on double pointed needles or using "magic loop" technique with circular needles

-Working lace (eyelet) patterns

Materials:

Sinfonia by Omega (affiliate link) sport weight yarn (100% cotton), 218 yards (199 meters) / 100 gr, color Teal - 1 skein (MC)
Sinfonia by Omega (affiliate link) sport weight yarn (100% cotton), 218 yards (199 meters) / 100 gr, color White - 0.2 skein (CC)
invisible zipper 7" (18 cm)

Needles: US 2 (2.75 mm) circular needles and dpn of the same size for sleeves OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE.

Gauge for stockinette stitch: 22 st x 32 rows = 4" x 4" (10 x 10 cm).

Notions:

- 4 stitch markers

- Stitch holders or 2 pieces 10” long of contrasting color waste yarn to hold stitches

- Yarn needle

- 7" light-weight dress zipper

- Sewing needle and thread of color matching the yarn for attaching the zipper.

Abbreviations:

dpn – double pointed needles

K – knit

P – purl

St, sts – stitch, stitches

pu&k - pick up and knit

as est. - as established, work as the pattern demands, here knit the RS rows and purl the WS rows.

co – cast on

RS – right side

WS – wrong side

yo - yarn over

kfr&b - knit front and back

m 1 - make 1 increase - I used the increase described by Elizabeth Zimmerman: make a backward loop over the right-hand needle and in the next row/round purl/knit it as a regular stitch.

sm - slip marker

rm - remove marker

MC - main color

CC - contrast color

Pattern Notes:

Stockinette Stitch in rows:
Row 1 (RS and all RS rows): knit
Row 2 (WS and all WS rows): purl
Repeat 2 rows


Stockinette Stitch in rounds: all rounds - knit

Garter Stitch in rounds:
Round 1: knit
Round 2: purl
Repeat rounds 1&2

Raglan: All increases for raglan are done in odd/right side (RS) rows in the following way:

Work till marker, m1, slip marker, knit 1 (raglan stitch), m1. Repeat on all 4 raglan lines, thus 8 stitches are added in each RS row on raglan lines. In each following wrong side row, purl the m1 stitches.

The selvedge/edge stitches are worked as follows: slip the first stitch knitwise and purl the last one.

Dress

The dress is worked from the top down, back and forth with the back seam. The bodice features the raglan sleeves, raglan increases are made in every right side row untill the division . The front of the dress, sleeves and skirt are decorated with eyelets. The eyelets on sleeves add to stitch count. The eyelets on front and on skirt do not add to stitch count.


With CC cast on 46 sts and work 2 rows in garter stitch: both rows knit.
Check the stitches and place markerts: 1 edge st, 5 st (right back), 1 st (the first raglan line, place marker before this st), 10 sts (right sleeve), 1 st (the second raglan line, place marker before this st), 10 sts (front), 1 st (the third raglan line, place marker before this st), 10 sts (left sleeve), 1 st (the forth raglan line, place marker before this st), 5 sts (left back), 1 edge st. = 46 sts

Change to MC.

Row 3 (RS): sl 1, *knit all sts till marker, m1, sm, k1, m1 - repeat from * 4 times, knit till the last st, p1. (+8 sts = 54 sts)

Row 4 (WS and all WS rows): sl 1, purl to the end of rhe row.

Row 5 (RS): sl 1, knit all sts till marker, m1, sm, k1, m1, k6, yo, k6, m1, sm, k1, m1, k5, yo, k2tog, k5, m1, sm, k1, m1, k6, yo, k6, m1, sm, k1, m1, knit all sts till the last one, p1. (+10 sts= 64 sts)

Row 7 (RS) : repeat row 3. (+8 sts 72 sts)

Row 9 (RS): sl 1, knit all sts till marker, m1, sm, k1, m1, k6, (yo, k2) x trwice, yo, k7, m1, sm, k1, m1, k4, (yo, k2tog, k1) x twice, yo, k2tog, k4, m1, sm, k1, m1, k7, (yo, k2) x trwice, yo, k6, m1, sm, k1, m1, knit all sts till the last one, p1. (+14 sts= 86 sts)

Row 11 (RS) : repeat row 3. (+8 sts= 94 sts)

Row 13 (RS): sl 1, knit all sts till marker, m1, sm, k1, m1, k8, (yo, k2) x 4 times, yo, k8, m1, sm, k1, m1, k4, (yo, k2tog, k1) x 4 times, yo, k2tog, k3, m1, sm, k1, m1, k8, (yo, k2) x 4 times, yo, k8, m1, sm, k1, m1, knit all sts till the last one, p1. (+18 sts= 112 sts)

Row 15 (RS): repeat row 3. (+8 sts= 120 sts)

Row 17 (RS): sl 1, knit all sts till marker, m1, sm, k1, m1, k10, (yo, k2) x 6 times, yo, k11, m1, sm, k1, m1, k4, (yo, k2tog, k1) x 6 times, yo, k2tog, k4, m1, sm, k1, m1, k11, (yo, k2) x 6 times, yo, k10, m1, sm, k1, m1, knit all sts till the last one, p1. (+22 sts= 142 sts)


Divide for sleeves and bodice:

Row 19 (RS): sl 1, k13, rm, k1, transfer the next 42 sts on a piece of waste yarn, rm, k27, rm, k1, transfer the next 42 sts on a piece of waste yarn, rm, k14, p1. = 58 sts

Row 20 (WS): sl 1, p57.

Row 21 (RS): sl 1, k56, p1.

Repeat rows 20-21 one more time, repeat row 20 one more time. Work rows 23 and 24 in CC.

Skirt:
Row 25 (RS, increase for skirt): sl1, *yo, kf&b (knit into front and back of the st) - repeat from * to the last st of the row, p1. = 170 sts

Row 26 (WS): sl1, p169.

Row 27 (RS): sl 1, k168, p1.

Repeat rows 26-27 twelve more times. Repeat row 26 one more time.
Row 53 (RS, eyelet row): sl 1, *k10, yo, k2tog, k9 - repeat from * 8 times, p1.

Row 54 (WS and all WS rows): sl 1, p169.

Row 55 (RS): sl 1, k168, p1.

Row 57 (RS, eyelet row): sl 1, *k7, (yo, k2tog, k1) x three times, k5 - repeat from * 8 times, p1.

Row 59 (RS): repeat row 55.

Row 61 (RS, eyelet row): sl1, *k4, (yo, k2tog, k1) x 5 times, k2 - repeat from * 8 times, p1.

Row 63 (RS): repeat row 55.

Row 65 (RS, eyelet row): sl1, *k1, (yo, k2tog, k1) x 6 times, yo, k2tog - repeat from * 8 times, p1.

Change to CC and work 2 rows (67 and 68) in stockinette :

Row 67 (RS): sl 1, k168, p1.

Row 68 (WS): sl 1, p169.
Work 4 more rows in garter stitch: all rows knit. Bind off

Sleeve

Sleeves are worked in rounds on double pointed needles.
Transfer sleeve sts from the yarn to the dpn, distributing the sts evenly. With MC work 4 rounds in stockinette: both rounds knit.
Change to CC and work 2 more rounds in stockinette (both rounds knit) and 4 rounds in garter st. (knit one round, purl the next).
Bind off.

Finishing:
Sew the back seam from the bottom of the dress leaving 7" (18 cm) opening for the zipper.
Install a zipper.
