Free Scarf Knitting Pattern

The scarf is worked back-and-forth from short to short edges. Intarsia is used for creating color borders on the long edges of the scarf.

Finished Measurements after blocking: 8" (20 cm) x 64" (162 cm)

Materials: Hand spun llama/alpaca DK weight yarn from the Autumn Hill Llamas Shop, color Natural Taupe - 150 yds (138 m) / 3 oz (85 gr) (A)
Hand spun llama/alpaca DK weight yarn from the Autumn Hill Llamas Shop, color Natural Brown - 100 yds (91 m)/ 2 oz (57 gr) (B)

Needles: 4.00 mm/US #6 straight needles OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE

Gauge for rib pattern: 16 sts x 24 rows = 4" x 4" (10 cm x 10 cm)

Notions: yarn needle

Abbreviations:
K – knit
P – purl
St – stitch
Sts - stitches
co – cast on
RS – right side
WS – wrong side


Pattern Notes:

Garter Stitch: All rows knit

Broken 2x2 Rib:

Row 1: knit
Row 2: *k2, p2* repeat to the end
Repeat rows 1-2

Intarsia - worked from different balls of yarn. Work to the place of color change, drop the old color, pick up the new color from under the old color and work to the next color change.

The selvedge/edge stitches are worked as follows: slip the first stitch knitwise and purl the last one.


Scarf

The scarf is worked back-and-forth from short to short edges. Intarsia is used for creating color borders on the long edges of the scarf. You’ll need 1 ball of color A and 2 balls of color B.

Cast on 36 sts with yarn B.

Work 4 rows in garter stitch.

From row 5 work with 3 balls of yarn: 2 of color B and 1 of color A.

Row 5 (RS): with yarn B sl1, k4, with color A k 28, with color B (from the second ball) k4, p1.

Row 6 (WS): with yarn B sl1, k4, with color A *k2, p2*, repeat 12 times, k2, with color B (from the second ball) k4, p1.

Rows 7, 9, 11, 13 like row 5

Rows 8, 10, 12, 14 like row 6

Row 15 with yarn B: sl 1, k 30 from the first ball of yarn B, drop the yarn from the first ball, pick up the yarn from the second ball of yarn B from under the first ball and k4, p1.

Row 16 yarn B: sl1, k4 from the second ball of yarn B, drop the yarn from this ball, pick up the yarn from the first ball of yarn B and k30, p1.

Repeat rows 5-16 thirty times or until desired length.

End with 4 rows of garter stitch worked in yarn B.


Finishing

Weave in yarn ends. Block the scarf.

You say to cast on 36 stitches, but row 5 has 36 stitches and row 6 has 58 stitches. Also you never explain how to join the three balls of yarn so that it is one scarf.
