Acorn Summer Brim Hat

Free Hat Crochet Pattern

The crown of this hat features a bold acorn lace motif. It definitely makes a statement, and is also great for keeping off the sun. The hat is crocheted from the top down in one piece.

Size: head circumference 21-22” (53-56 cm)

Materials: Aunt Lydia (affiliate link)'s 100% Mercerized Cotton Size 3, 150yd/138m, color - Natural - 3 balls.
Millinery wire 16 gauge - 40" (100 cm).
Pliers

Hook: US D (3.25 mm)

Gauge: 22 dc = 4" (10 cm)

Sc - single crochet
Dc - double crochet
Tr – treble crochet
FPdc – front post double crochet
2dccl - 2 dc cluster
3dccl - 3 dc cluster
4dccl - 4 dc cluster
2trcl – 2 tr cluster
3trcl – 3 tr cluster
FPdc-dccl – front post dc and dc cluster
dc-FPdccl – dc and front post dc cluster
FPdc-dc-FPdccl – front post dc, dc and front post dc cluster (3 dc decrease)
2FPdccl – 2 FPdc cluster

Hat

The hat is worked top down, in the round, without seams.

Chain 8, join to the beginning of the chain to form a circle. Continue to work in-the-round.
Round 1: ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 23 dc into ch 8, sl st to ch 3.

Round 2: ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 2dccl into each on next 2 dc, *ch 3, 3dccl into the last st of the previous cluster and into each of next 2 dc, repeat from * 10 more times, ch 3, sl st to ch 3.

Round 3: ch 8 (counts as 1 tr and ch 5), *3trcl into ch 3, ch 5, repeat from * 10 more times, ch 5, 2trcl into last ch-3, sl st to 3rd ch of ch-8.

Round 4: ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 4 dc in ch-5, *ch 3, 5 dc into next ch-5, repeat from *10 more times, ch 3, sl st to ch 3.

Round 5: ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc into each of next 4 dc, FPdc into last dc (there are 2 dc into the last dc: dc and FPdc), *ch 4, 1 FPdc into next dc, 1 dc into same dc, 1 dc into each of next 4 dc, 1 FPdc into last dc, repeat from * 10 more times, ch 4, 1 FPdc around ch-3 of the previous round, sl st to ch-3.

Round 6: ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc into each of next 4 dc, FPdc into last dc (there are 2 dc into the last dc: dc and FPdc), *ch 5, 1 FPdc into next dc, 1 dc into same dc, 1 dc into each of next 4 dc, 1 FPdc into last dc, repeat from * 10 more times, ch 5, 1 FPdc around ch-3 of the previous round, sl st to ch-3.

Round 7: same as round 6

Round 8: ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc into each of next 3 dc, dc-FPdccl into each of 2 last dc (2dc decrease), *ch 5, FPdc-dccl into each of next 2 dc, 1 dc into each of next 3 dc, 1 dc-FPdccl into each of 2 last dc (2 dc decrease), repeat from * 10 more times, ch 5, 1 FPdc around ch-3 of the previous round, sl st to ch-3.

Brim

Round 23: Ch 3, FPdc into FPdc of the dc-FPdc of previous round, *2 dc into ch-2, 1 FPdc into each of next 5 dc, 2 dc into ch-2, 2 FPdccl into FPdc parts of the FPdc-dc-FPdccl of the previous round, repeat from * 11 more times, FPdc around last FPdc of the previous round. Sl st to ch 3.

Round 24: ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc into the same st, *1 dc into each of next 4 dc, 2 dc into next dc, repeat from * to the end of the round, end with sl st to ch 3.

Round 25: ch 4 (counts as 1 dc and ch 1), *skip 1, 1 dc into next dc, ch 1, repeat from * to the end of the round, sl st to 3rd ch of ch-4.

Round 26: ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), *1 dc into next ch-1, 1 dc into next dc, repeat from * to the end of the round, work 2 dc into every 3rd ch-1 space (increases), total increase for 24 sts.

Rounds 27-32: repeat rounds 25-26, increasing in every even round for 24 dc.

Round 33: ch 1 (counts as 1 sc), work sc to the end of the round crocheting around the millinery
wire.

While crocheting around the wire, stop when you get to the last 2 inches (5 cm), adjust the wire.
Then the secure the ends of the wire with the pliers, twisting and flattening the ends, and end
the round, working sc over the connection. Tie off.
