Free Doll Coat Knitting Pattern

Skills Required/Techniques Used:

-Knit & purl, cast on & bind off

-Increasing: make 1 (m1)

-Decreasing: knit 2 together (k2tog), slip-slip-knit (ssk)

-Working in the round on double pointed needles

-Picking up stitches

-Basic chrocheting

Materials: Bernat (affiliate link) Baby Sport DK weight yarn (100% acrylic), 1255 yards (1148 meters) / 350 gr, color Light Lilac – 1 ball or 100 yards. (A)
Fun Fur by Lion Brand (affiliate link) (100% polyester), 64 yards (59 meters)/ 50 gr, color Lavender – 1 skein (B)

Notions:

8 stitch markers, 2 pieces of waste yarn for holding stitches, yarn needle, 3 buttons about 10mm in diameter, sewing needle and thread to attach buttons.

Needles: US # 4 (3.5 mm) OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE double pointed needles (dpn), one set 8” long for the coat and another set 4-5” long for the sleeves. Alternatively, instead of 8” long dpn, you can use circular needles, (to use 2 pairs of circular needles ia more convenient).

Crochet Hook: 3.5 mm

Gauge: 16 sts = 4" (10 cm)

Abbreviations:
K – knit
P - purl
m1 - make 1 increase - I used the increase described by Elizabeth Zimmerman. Make a backward loop over the right-hand needle and in the next row/round purl/knit as a regular stitch.
p&k – pick up and knit

RS - right side

WS - wrong side

St, sts - stitch, stitches

pm - place marker

sm - slip marker

Pattern Notes:

Stockinette Stitch in rows:
Row 1 (RS and all RS rows): knit
Row 2 (WS and all WS rows): purl

Repeat 2 rows

Stockinette Stitch in rounds: knit all rounds

Garter Stitch in rows: knit all rows

Garter stitch in rounds:
Round 1 and all odd rounds: knit
Round 2 and all even rounds: purl

Selvedge/edge sts worked as follows: knit the first and purl the last stitch in the row.

Raglan increases: Increase for raglan by making 1 st (m1) on each side of indicated, marked, stitch in every right side (RS) row: m1, sm (slip marker), k1 (raglan st), m1. Therer are 4 raglan lines, so in every RS row the number of sts is increased by 8.

Coat

The coat is worked top-down, seamlessly, back and forth, in stockinette stitch, with raglan sleeves, on 2 long double pointed needles (dpn) or 2 pairs of circular needles. Yarn is changed every row, that's why you knit 2 rows in one direction, then purl 2 rows back. Odd rows are worked in yarn A, even rows are worked in yarn B.
The button band is crocheted.
Sleeves are worked in the round on short dpn.
Increases for A-silhouette (m1) on bodice are made before and after the marked stitches.


Coat

Yoke:
With yarn A cast on 38 sts, work the next 3 rows with yarn A:
Row 1 (RS): k37, p1
Row 2 (WS): k1, purl back all sts, place markers before and after raglan stitches: 1 selvedge - 4 front - 1 raglan (place the a marker before and a marker after this st) - 8 sleeve - 1 raglan (place a marker before and after this st) - 8 back - 1 raglan (place a marker before and after this st) - 8 sleeve - 1 raglan (place a marker before and after this st) - 4 front - 1 selvedge.
Row 3 (RS, increase row with yarn A): *knit till the marker, m1, sm, k1, sm, m1 - repeat from * 4 times, knit till the last st, p1. (+8 sts) = 46 sts. DO not turn.
Row 4 (RS, with yarn B) : slide the work to the other end of the dpn, knit till the last st, p1. Turn.
Row 5 (WS, increase row with yarn A): k1, *purl till the marker, m1, sm, k1, sm, m1 - repeat from * 4 times, purl to the end of the row. (+8 sts) = 54 sts. Do not turn.
Row 6 (WS, with yarn B): slide the work to the other end of dpn, k1, purl to the end of the row. Turn.

Repeat rows 3-6 three more times.
In row 18, you will have 102 sts.

Bodice:

Divide stitches for bodice and sleeves.
Row 19 (RS, yarn A): k14 (1 selvedge and 13 front), transfer the next 24 sts (sleeve) to a stitche holder or a piece of waste yarn; cast on 3 sts for the underarm, k 26 sts (back), transfer the next 24 sts (sleeve) to a holder or waste yarn, cast on 3 sts for the underarm, k 13, p 1 (front and elvedge). You have 60 sts on the working needles and 24 sts on each holder for sleeves. DO not turn.

Row 20 (RS, yarn B, slide the work to the other end of the needle): k59, p1. Turn.

Row 21 (WS, yarn A): k1, p59. Do not turn.

Row 22 (WS, yarn B, slide the work to the other end of needle ): k1, p59. Turn.

For A-shape of the coat, starting with row 23, make increases in every 6th row. Row 23 has 7 increases as follows:

Row 23 (RS, yarn A, increase row): k1, m1, k 14, m1, pm (place marker), k1, m1, k 14, pm, m1, pm, k 14, m1, pm, k1 , pm, m1, k 14, m1, p1. = 67 sts
In the following increase rows (29, 35 and 41), make increases after the first selvedge st, before the last selvedge st, and before and after each marked st (8 increases total). After row 41, you should have 91 sts. Work as established to row 47.

Row 46 (WS): yarn B, k1, p90. Cut yarn B. Continue with yarn A only.

Rows 47-50: k90, p1. Bind off. Cut yarn A.

Sleeve

Transfer 24 sts to short dpn, distributing them evenly, p&k 3 underarm sts. Mark the beginning of the round = 27 sts
Work 26 rounds in stockinette: one round in yarn A, one round in yarn B.

Work the next 5 rounds (27 - 31) in garter st using yarn A only. Bind off.

Finishing

With yarn A, crochet 1 row of single crochet (sc) along the edges of the front. On the right front edge make 3 button holes: sc - chain 2 - sc.
Sew 3 buttons to the left front edge.
