Free Knitting Scarf Pattern

Finished size: 8" x 75" (20 x 190 cm)

Skills Required/Techniques Used:
--Knit & purl, cast on & bind off

Materials: Tahki (affiliate link) Torino Bulky yarn 50m (55 yds)/50g - 4 balls.
Needles: US #8 (5.00 mm) OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE

Gauge: 12 st = 4" (10 cm)

K ā€“ knit

Pā€“ purl

st, sts - stitch, stitches

sl - slip stitch

Pattern Notes:

Diagonal Rib:
multiple of 5
Row 1(RS) : *k5 k, p5 - repeat from * across
Row 2 and all even (WS) rows: knit k over k, p over p
Row 3: p1, *k5, p5 - repeat from * to last 4 sts, p4
Row 5: p2, *k5 , p5 - repeat from * to last 3 sts, p3
Row 7: p3, *k5, p5 - repeat from * to last 2 sts, p2
Row 9: p4, *k5, p5 - repeat from * to last 1ss, p1
Row 11: p5, *k5, p5 - repeat from * across
Row 13: k1, p5, *k5, p5- repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4
Row 15: k2, p5, *k5, p5 - repeat from * to last 3 sts, k3
Row 17: k3, p5, *k5 k, p5 - repeat from * to last 2 sts, k2
Row 19: k4 , p5 , *k5 , p5 - repeat from * to the last st, k1
Repeat Rows 1-20

Selvedge/edge stitches: slip (sl) the first stitch in a row as if to knit and purl (p) the last stitch.

Scarf:
Cast on 27 sts (25 for the pattern + 2 edge sts).

Row 1 (RS): Sl1, (k5, p5) x 2 times, k5, p1. (27 sts)

Row 2 (WS): Sl1, (p5, k5) x 2 times, p6.

Row 3: Sl1, p1, (k5, p5) x 2times, k4, p1.

Row 4: Sl1, p4, (k5, p5) x 2 times, k1, p1.

Row 5: Sl1, p2, (k5, p5) x 2 times, k3, p1.

Row 6: Sl1, p3, (k5, p5) x 2 times, k2, p1.

Row 7: Sl 1, p3, (k5, p5) x 2 times, k2, p1.

Row 8: Sl 1, p2, (k5, p5) x 2 times, k3, p1.

Weave in all yarn ends. Block the scarf. Make and attach fringe.

i am not sure what it means but if u look it says 27 sts and thats what i go by instead of the working in 5's.. hope that helps

Yes, it means just that. They give you that info so that you can adjust the size. If you have chunky yarn, you could CO say 17, or if you wanted to do an afghan,you could take your gauge and decide how wide you wanted it and CO that many stitches closest to 5. Ex: you want an afghan 4 ft wide (48") and your gauge is 6 st/inch that would be 288 stitches, round to 290 to make it a multiple of 5 and add your 2 selvedge stitches, so 292 stitches - now you've converted the pattern from a scarf to an afghan. Hope that helps.

What does cast on multiple of 5 amount of stitches mean? 5,10,15,20,etc?
