Materials: Knit Picks (affiliate link) Wool of the Andes 100% wool worsted weight yarn 110 yards (101 meters) / 50 grams, color Bermuda – 2 skeins. (DC)
Knit Picks (affiliate link) Wool of the Andes 100% wool worsted weight yarn 110 yards (101 meters) / 50 grams, color White – 2 skeins. (LC)

Needles: US #7 (4.5 mm) circular needles 40” long.

Gauge: 16 sts x 32 rows = 4" x 4" (10 cm x 10 cm) in garter st.

Abbreviations:
k - knit
sl - slip 1st st
DC – dark color
LC – light color
RS - right side
WS - wrong side
RS LC row – right side of the light color row
RS DC right side of the dark color row
p&k – pickup and knit
w&t – wrap and turn

Pattern Notes:

Garter st in rows: all rows knit

Chain Selvedge: the selvedge/edge stitches are worked as follows: slip the first stitch purlwise and knit the last one.

Wrap and turn in the short rows:
With yarn in front slip 1 stitch to the right needle.
Move yarn between the needles to the back.
Slip the stitch back to the left needle.
Turn the work and bring yarn back to the wrong side between the needles.



Short Overview of the Pattern:

The scarf is worked in garter st in two sections with interchanging light and dark stripes. In the first section it is shaped with the increases at the beginning of the light color (LC) rows on the right side (RS) light color (LC) rows.

In the next section the scarf is shaped with increases made in the same manner at the beginning of the RS LC rows, and with the short rows at the end of both RS LC and RS DC rows.

The scarf is finished with 6 rows of garter st border on all sides.

The First Section

With DC, cast on 3 sts and knit 1 foundation row.

Row 1 (RS): Using LC yarn, k1, m1, k2. (4 sts)

Row 2 (WS): Using LC yarn, sl, knit to the end of the row.

Row 3: Using DC yarn, sl, knit to the end of the row.

Row 4: Using DC yarn, sl, knit to the end of the row.

Row 5: Using LC yarn, sl, m1, knit to the end of the row. (5 sts)

Row 6: Using LC yarn, sl, knit to the end of the row.

Row 7: Using DC yarn, sl, knit to the end of the row.

Row 8: Using DC yarn, sl, knit to the end of the row.

Repeat rows 5-8 sixty (60) more times, until you have 65 sts.


The Second, Short Row, Section


Row 249: Using LC yarn, sl, m1, knit to the last 2 sts of the row, w&t. (64 sts)

Row 250: Using LC yarn, sl, knit to the end of the row.

Row 251: Using DC yarn, sl, knit to the last st of the row, w&t. (63 sts)

Row 252: Using DC yarn, sl, knit to the end of the row.

Row 253: Using LC yarn, sl, m1, knit to the last st of the row, w&t. (63 sts)

Row 254: Using LC yarn, sl, knit to the end of the row.

Row 255: Using DC yarn, sl, knit to the last st of the row, w&t. (62 sts)

Row 256: Using DC yarn, sl, knit to the end of the row.

Repeat rows 253-256 until 1 st left on the right needle on the RS.

Don’t cut the yarn


Finishing:

First Border

This border is worked on the open sts along one side of the scarf.

Row 1: Using DC yarn, knit to the end of the row, working each wrapped stitch together with the wrap. Turn.
Row 2: Using DC yarn, s1, knit to the end of the row.
Row 3: Using LC yarn, s1, m1, knit to the end of the row.
Row 4: Using LC yarn, s1, knit to the end of the row.
Row 5: Using DC yarn, s1, knit to the end of the row.
Row 6: Using DC yarn, s1, knit to the end of the row.
Bind off with DC yarn. Don’t cut the yarn

Second Border

Row 1: Using DC yarn, pickup& knit stitches along the adjusted edge of the shawl. Turn.
Row 2: Using DC yarn, s1, knit to the end of the row.
Row 3: Using LC yarn, s1, m1, knit to the end of the row.
Row 4: Using LC yarn, s1, knit to the end of the row.
Row 5: Using DC yarn, s1, knit to the end of the row.
Row 6: Using DC yarn, s1, knit to the end of the row.
Bind off with DC yarn. Don’t cut the yarn.

Third Border

Row 1: Using DC yarn, pickup&knit stitches along the adjusted edge of the shawl. Turn.
Row 2: Using DC yarn, s1, knit to the end of the row.
Row 3: Using LC yarn, s1, m1, knit to the end of the row.
Row 4: Using LC yarn, s1, knit to the end of the row.
Row 5: Using DC yarn, s1, knit to the end of the row.
Row 6: Using DC yarn, s1, knit to the end of the row.
Bind off with DC yarn.

Weave in ends. Block.
