Rainbow Flowers Motif Shawl

Free Shawl Crochet Pattern

This colorful shawl is assembled from small individual blocks. It's easy to make in any size or shape that you desire. The lace is pretty light weight, so even a large shawl like I made drapes well and is easy to arrange.

I used two yarns: a solid color for the outside of the blocks, and a self-striping rainbow-colored yarn for the flowers in the middle. When working the blocks, I arranged it so that the flowers change color in a rainbow pattern across the shawl. This shawl is also great for using up small scraps of yarn, since you don't need much yarn for each individual block.

Square Motif

Rounds 1-3 in CC

Round 1: chain 12, join with sl st to make a ring.

Round 2: ch 1, 16 sc into a ring, sl st to ch-1.

Round 3: ch 1, 1 sc into next sc, *ch 6, 3trtrcl into next sc, ch 6, 1 sc into next st, repeat from * 7 more times, end with sl st to ch 1. Cut the yarn.

The rest of the motif is in MC.

Round 4: secure the yarn at the top of the first 3trtrcl, ch 1, 1 sc between 3trtrcl and ch-6, *ch 7, 1 sc in the space between ch-6 and 3trtrcl, 1 sc in the space between 3trtrcl and next ch-6, repeat from * 7 more time, end with sl st to ch-1.

Round 5: ch 1, * (1 sc, 1 hdc, 7 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc) into next ch-7, ch 1, (2 sc, ch 3, 2 sc, ch 3, 2 sc, ch 3, 2 sc) into next ch-7, repeat from * 3 more times, sl st to ch-1.

Row 3: ch 1, 1 sc into next sc, *ch 6, 3trtrcl into next sc, ch 6, 1 sc into next st, repeat from * 3 more times. Turn

Row 4: ch 10, *1 sc in the space between ch-6 and 3trtrcl, 1 sc in the space between 3trtrcl and next ch-6, ch 7, repeat from * 3 more times, end with ch 4 (instead of 7), 1trtr into the last st. Turn.

Row 5: ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), (3 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc) into next ch-4, ch 1, (2 sc, ch 3, 2 sc, ch 3, 2 sc, ch 3, 2 sc) into next ch-7, ch 1, (1 sc, 1 hdc, 7 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc) into next ch-7, ch 1, (2 sc, ch 3, 2 sc, ch 3, 2 sc, ch 3, 2 sc) into next ch-7, ch 1, (1 sc, 1 hdc, 4 dc) into ch-10. Turn.

Shawl

Crochet 55 square motifs and 11 triangle motifs. Connect the motifs as-you-go using the alternate round 7 for square motifs. Crochet square motifs first, then crochet and connect triangle motifs as-you-go to the top edge of the shawl.

Finishing

Work 1 row of sc along the longer side of the shawl (along the row of triangle motives).
Make 7” fringe. For fringe cut the yarn for 15” lengths.
Block the shawl.
