American Girl Doll Fun Fur Vintage Jacket

Free Doll Jacket Knitting Pattern

Fun fur yarn is great for doll clothes! Because of the smaller scale, it gives doll clothes a puffy, fluffy, fun look that looks more like ostrich feathers than fur. I combined this effect with a short jacket style to create a 70s Disco / Glam Rock look. You can, of course, also knit this jacket without using Fun Fur, for a completely different look.

The jacket is knitted in one piece from the top down, and features raglan sleeves. The button band is finished with crochet, but you can also knit it.

Skills Required/Techniques Used:

-Knit & purl, cast on & bind off

-Increasing

-Working in the round on double pointed needles

-Picking up stitches

-Crochet on the edge

Materials: Fun Fur by Lion Brand (100% polyester), 64 yards (59 meters)/ 50 gr – 1 skein (FY - fancy yarn)
100% Wool Brown Sheep Nature Spun Sport Weight yarn 184 yd (168 m)/50g, color 187 Red Fox – 1 ball (MY- main yarn)

Needles: US #3 (3.25 mm) circular needles and double pointed needles (dpn) for sleeves OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE

Gauge for stockinette st in Nature Spun Sport yarn: 20 sts - 4" (10 cm)

Notions:

Crochet hook 3.25 mm, 5 buttons, 4 stitch markers. 2 lengths of waste yarn of contrast color

Abbreviations:

k – knit
co – cast on
pu&k- pick up and knit
ssk – slip, slip, knit (left slanting decrease)
k2tog – knit 2 togetherm1 - make 1 increase - I used the increase described by Elizabeth Zimmerman: make a backward loop over the right-hand needle and in the next row/round purl/knit as a regular stitch.
RS - right side
WS - wrong side
Sc – single crochet
Ch - chain
sm - slip marker

MY - main yarn

FY - fancy yarn (here fun fur)

Pattern Notes:

Garter stitch in rows:
All row stitches knit.

Stockinette in rows:
Row 1 (RS) : knit
Row 2 (WS): purl

Stockinette in rounds:
All rounds - knit

1x1 Rib in rows, multiple of 2 plus 1:
Row 1: *k1, p1 - repeat from * to last st., k1.
Row 2: *p1, k1 - repeat from * to last st, p1.

1x1 Rib in rounds multiple of 2:
All rounds * k1, p1 - repeat from * to the end of the round.

The selvedge/edge stitches are worked as follows: knit the first st and purl the last one.

Raglan increases: place marker before each raglan stitch, slip markers while working. There are 4 raglan stitches and 4 markers. Increase 1 stitch (m1) before and 1 stitch (m1) after each marked raglan stitch in every RS row. Thus the number of stitches in every RS row will increase by 8.

Jacket

The jacket is worked top down in one piece, in stockinette stitch, with increases on the raglan lines. Sleeves are worked in the round on double pointed needles. The button band is crocheted. Work 4 rows in main yarn (Nature Spun), then 2 rows in fancy yarn (fun fur).

With main yarn cast on 45 sts, these include: 1 edge st, 4 right front, 1 raglan (place a marker before this st), 10 sts (right sleeve), 1 raglan (place the second marker before this st), 11 sts (back), 1 st raglan (place the third marker before this st), 10 sts (left sleeve), 1 st raglan (place the forth marker before this st), 4 sts (left front), 1 edge.

Work 2 rows in garter stitch.

Row 3 (RS) and all odd rows: *knit all sts till marker, sm, m1, k1, m1, - repeat from * 4 times, knit the remaining sts till the last, p1. (+8)

Row 4 (WS) and all even rows: k1, purl all sts to the end of the row.

Work 22 rows:

rows 1-4 -MY

rows 5-6 - FY (fun fur)

rows 7-10 - MY

rows 11-12 - FY

rows 13-16 - MY

rows 17-18- FY

rows 19-22 - MY

After row 22 you'll have 125 sts.

Divide for sleeves and bodice.

Row 23 (RS, FY): k 16, transfer 30 sts to a piece of waste yarn, co 1, k 33, transfer 30 sts to another piece of waste yarn, co 1, k 15, p1. = 67 sts

Row 24 (WS, FY): k1, purl 66.

Work as established 12 more rows, don't forget to alternate yarns.

Work 6 rows in 1x1 rib in MY. Bind off.

Sleeves:

Transfer 30 sts from waste yarn to dpn, distribute evenly, pu&k 1 underarm st. Place a marker at the beginning of the round.

Work 26 rounds in stockinette - all rounds knit, alterating yarns (4 rows in MY, 2 rows in FY). At the same time, make decreases in rounds 14, 20 in the following way: k1, k2tog, knit to the last 2 sts, ssk. + 27 sts. In round 26 k2tog in the begining of the round. = 26 sts

Work 6 rounds in 1x1 rib in MY. Bind off.

Crochet Button Band

With the crochet hook, RS facing, work *5 sc along right front edge, ch 3, skip 2 sts – repeat to the upper right front corner to get 5 buttonholes, end with 2 sc. Make 3 sc in the corner, continue working sc along the neckline, work 3 sc in the upper left corner, work a row of sc along the left front edge. Turn. Work another row of sc in each sc along all edges. Tie off. Cut yarn.

Finishing

Weave in the ends of yarns. Sew 5 buttons on the left button band.

Have fun!
