Free Cape Knitting Pattern

This traditionally-styled cape is warm and roomy, making it great for the colder months of the year. It's a great project for the beginning knitter, as it is quick and simple to knit.

Size: one size fits most

Materials: Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick super bulky weight yarn 106 yards (97 meters) /170 gr, color Granite - 5 balls
2 buttons

Needles: US11 (8 mm) circular OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE

Gauge for stockinette st:
9 sts x 12 rows = 4" x 4" (10 cm x 10 cm)

Patterns:
Stockinette Stitch
1st row and all odd rows - knit sts
2nd row and all even rows - purl sts.

Garter St:
All rows - knit

Abbreviations:
k – knit
p - purl
k2tog - knit 2 together
co - cast on
yo - yarn over
RS - right side
WS - wrong side
pu&k - pick up and knit
m1 (Make 1 increase) - I used the increase described by Elizabeth Zimmerman: Make a backward loop over the right-hand needle and in the next row knit (purl) it as a regular stitch.

Collar

Pick up 46 sts along the neckline. Work garter stitch for 8 rows. Decrease evenly for 4 sts in rows 5 and 7. Bind off.

Finishing

Knit 2 pieces of I-cord for the frog closure.

Sew them onto the right front with a figure-eight twist (see pictures). Sew 2 buttons to the left front to match.

"One size" never works for me - too small. Across my shoulders is 20 inches. Can you tell me what the measurement is of the pattern? How can I increase across shoulders? I can always add rows for the length.

The last raglan increase is made on row 33. To make the cape bigger continue to make increases as established for 6-8 more rows. Then continue to follow pattern
