Cut yarn leaving 6" tail. Finish off by running the working yarn through the 10 remaining sts, pulling firmly to close the top, and darning it in.

Knitting the ear flaps:

Transfer the 18 sts from the safety pin on a double-pointed needle. Pick up 18 sts from the edge of the hat's right side on the second double-pointed needle.
Using the third double pointed needle start knitting the ear-flaps using the diagram 2. Knit 24 rounds.
From rnd 25 start decreasing by knitting the last st on the right side and the first stitch on the wrong side together, and the last st on the wrong side and the first st on the right side together. You'll decrease 2 stitches in each round. Knit, making decreases in each round, until you have 4 sts left (2 on the right side and 2 on the wrong side).
From this point knit I-cord to make the ties. Knit the length you need. Cast off.

Finishing:

Tuck the lining into the hat. Sew the middle of the lining to the inner top of the hat.
