American Girl Doll Cuff-to-Cuff Cable Sweater

Free Doll Sweater Knitting Pattern

Skills Required/Techniques Used:

-Knit & purl, cast on & bind off

-Increasing: yarn over (YO),

-Decreasing: knit 2 together (k2tog), purl 2 together(p2tog)

-Working simple cable

Materials: Knit Picks (affiliate link) Palette fingering weight 100% wool yarn 210 m (231 yds)/ 50 g color Semolina - 1 ball.

Needles: US #1 (2.25) straight needles OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE

Gauge for reverse stockinette stitch: 32 sts x 60 rows = 4" (10 cm)

Notions: yarn needle, cable needle, four 5-6 mm buttons, sewing needle and thread to attach buttons

Abbreviations:

K – knit

K2tog - knit 2 together

P – purl

P2tog - purl 2 together

yo - yarn over

St – stitch

Sts - stitches

Pu&k - pick up and knit

As est. - as established, work as the pattern demands, here knit the RS rows and purl the WS rows.

Co – cast on

RS – right side

WS – wrong side


Pattern Notes:

Reverse Stockinette:
Row 1 (RS): purl,

Row 2: (WS): knit

Repeat 2 rows.

1x1 Rib:
Row 1 (RS): *k1, p1 - repeat from * across the row
Row 2 (WS): *p1, k1 - repeat from * across the row
Repeat rows 1-2.

Garter stitch:
All rows knit.

2x2 Cable:
Row 2, 4 and 6 (WS) purl.
Rows 1 and 3 (RS): k4
Row 5 (RS): slip 2 sts on a cable needle and hold before the work, k the next 2 sts, return the sts from the cable needle to the left needle and knit them one by one.

Repeat 6 rows.

Selvedge/edge stitches: knit the first st and purl the last st in the row

Sweater

The sweater is worked back-and-forth on straight needles from cuff to cuff as one piece.
When divided for front and back, it's worked from 2 balls of yarn, back and front simultaneously. Odd rows are RS rows, even rows are WS rows. All WS rows are worked as established: k sts are knit, purled sts are purled,

Cast on 36 sts and work 5 rows in 1x1 rib.

Row 1 (RS): *k1, p1 - repeat across the row. Repeat row 1 four more times.
While working the 6th row (RS), increase for 10 sts distributing them evenly along the row.

Row 6: (WS): *(K1, p1, k1, m1, p1) twice, k1, p1, m1, (k1, p1) twice, m1 - repeat from * twoce, k1, p1, k1, m1, p1, k1, p1, m1, k1, p1. (=46 sts)
Row 7 (RS): k1, p7, k4 (cable), p4, k4 (cable), p6, k4 (cable), p4, k4 (cable), p8 (= 46 sts)

Row 8 (WS): k8, p4, k4, p4, k6, p4, k4, p4, k7, p1.

Repeat rows 7-8 one more time.

Row 11 (RS): k1, p7, slip 2 sts on a cable needle and hold before the work, k the next 2 sts, return the sts from the cable needle to the left needle and knit them one by one. p4, slip 2 sts on a cable needle and hold before the work, k the next 2 sts, return the sts from the cable needle to the left needle and knit them one by one., p6, slip 2 sts on a cable needle and hold before the work, k the next 2 sts, return the sts from the cable needle to the left needle and knit them one by one. p4, slip 2 sts on a cable needle and hold before the work, k the next 2 sts, return the sts from the cable needle to the left needle and knit them one by one, p8

Row 12: like row 8.

Repeat rows 7-12 four more times. Repeat rows 7-8 one more times, repeat row 7 one more time.

Row 40 (WS): k8, p4, k4, p4, k6, p4, k4, p4, k7, p1, co 18. (= 64 sts)

Row 41 (RS): knit 18 cast-on sts, work the next 46 sts of the sleeve as established, co 18 sts. (= 82 sts)
Row 42 (WS): knit 18 cast-on sts, work the next 46 sts of the sleeve as established, k 17, p1.

Row 43 (RS): k18, work the next 46 sts as est, k17, p1.

Repeat row 43 three more times.
Row 47 (RS): k18, p8, cable on 4 sts as est., p4, cable on 4 sts as est., p1, bind off 4, cable on 4 sts as est, p4, cable on 4 sts as est, p8, k17. p1.
Row 48 (WS): k18, p 39 till the bound off sts. attach yarn from the second ball of yarn to another edge of the bound-off sts, kw, p20, k17, p1.
Work as established from 2 balls of yarn 50 rows.
Row 99 (RS): work as established 39 sts, co 4 sts, go on as established from the same ball of yarn, cut off the yarn from another ball.

In the next, WS, row, knit the cast-on sts.
Work as est. 5 more rows.

Row 106 (WS): bind off 18 sts, work as established the remaining 64 sts. (=64 sts)

Row 107 (RS): bind off 18 sts, work as est. the remaining 46 sts. (= 46 sts)

Work 33 rows of the sleeve as est. In the next row decrease 10 sts evenly distributed along the work:

Row 141 (RS): k1, p1, p2tog, p2, (p2tog, k2, k2tog, p3) 4 times, p2tog, p2. (= 36 sts)
Work the next 6 rows in 1x1 rib, bind off.

Block the piece before proceeding.

The neckline bands of front and back are worked separately.
Front: pu&k 42 sts along the front neckline. Work 6 rows in 1 x 1 rib, bind off. Cut yarn, leave a
tail for finishing.
Back: pu&k 42 sts along the back neckline. Work 3 rows in 1 x 1 rib.
Row 4 (WS) making the button holes: work as est 5 sts, yo, k2tog, work as est 3 sts, yo, k3tog,
work as est. 19 sts, k2tog, yo, work as est. 3 sts, k2tog, yo, work 5 sts. Work 2 more rows in 1x 1 rib. Bind off.

Finishing:
Sew the sides of the neckline bands in place. Sew 4 buttons on the front neckline band under
the button holes.
Sew the sleeve and side seams.
