Free Baby Cardigan Knitting Pattern

The cardigan is worked top-down, back and forth, without seams.

Size: 6m (12m, 18m, 24m)
Chest: 17 (18, 19, 20) inches [43 (46, 48, 50) cm]

Materials: 100% alpaca hand-spun worsted weight yarn, color Camel, 110 yds (100 m) / 50 gr - 2.5 skeins
100% alpaca hand-spun worsted weight yarn, color Dark Brown, 110 yds (100 m) / 50 gr - 0.5 skeins
6 small buttons

Needles: US size 6 (4.0 mm) circular and dpn (for sleeves)

Gauge for stockinette stitch: 18 st x 24 rows = 4" x 4" (10 cm x 10 cm)

Stockinette Stitch
1 row and all odd rows - knit sts
2 row and all even rows - purl sts
Repeat rows 1-2

Wrap and turn in the short rows:
Work to designated st
With yarn in front slip next stitch to the right needle.
Move yarn between the needles to the back.
Slip the stitch back to the left needle.
Turn the work and bring yarn to the back between the needles.



Directions:

Cast on 29 (29, 35, 35) st and purl 1 row.
Divide stitches as follows: 1 edge st, 1 st (left front), 1 st (raglan line, place marker), 5 (5, 7, 7) sts (left sleeve), 1 st (raglan line, place marker), 11 (11, 13, 13) sts (back), 1 st (raglan line, place marker), 5 (5, 7, 7) sts (right sleeve), 1 st (raglan line, place marker), 1 sts (right front), 1 edge st. Raglan sts should be knit in odd rows and purled in even rows.
Work stockinette stitch for 10 (10, 12, 12) rows increasing by 10 sts in each odd row (double increase at the raglan sts as follows: *M1 (make one), k1, M1 *) and 1 st at the beginning and the end of the row.
Rows 11-30 (11-32, 13-34, 13-36): increase only by 8 sts in each odd row at the raglan line.

Divide for sleeves
Row 31 (33, 35, 37): Work left front sts, transfer left sleeve sts to a length of yarn, cast on 3 sts with single cast on, work back sts, transfer right sleeve sts to a length of yarn, cast on 3 sts with single cast on and work right front stitches. Continue to work bodice back and forth, rows 32-52 (34-56, 36-60, 38-64).
Rows 53-60 (57-64, 61-68, 65-72): rib 1x1. Work 2 rows of rib with the main yarn and 6 rows with dark brown yarn
Bind off.

Sleeve

Sleeves are worked in rounds.
Transfer sleeve sts from the yarn to the needles and pick up 3 sts over the 3 underarm sts. Place a marker on the 2nd st. Work stockinette sts for 29 (32, 35, 38) rounds. Decrease by 2 sts in every 4th round at the marker working k3tog (knit 3 together).
Work 6 rounds of rib 1x1: 2 rounds with main yarn and 4 rounds with dark brown yarn.
Bind off.

Finishing:
The shawl collar is worked along with button bands in 1x1 rib and shaped with short rows.
With main yarn pick up 40 (42, 44, 46) st along each front and 40 (42, 44, 46) st along the neckline. Total 120 (126, 132, 138) st.
Row 1: k1, p1 to the end of the row. Work the first and the last 3 stitches with dark brown yarn.
Row 2: work 36 (38, 41, 41) st, wrap and turn
Row 3: work 32 (34, 36, 36) st, wrap and turn
Row 4: work 28 (28, 31, 31) st, wrap and turn
Row 5: work 24 (24, 26, 26) st, wrap and turn
Row 6: work 20 (20, 21, 21) st, wrap and turn
Row 7: work 16 (16, 16, 16) st, wrap and turn
Row 8: work 11 st, wrap and turn
Row 9: work 6 st, wrap and turn
Row 10: work rib 1x1 to the end of the row.
Rows 11-16: rib 1x1 with dark brown yarn. In row 13 make 6 buttonholes by working k2tog (knit 2 together), yo.

Sew on 6 buttons.
