I am having trouble with round flap. I can't get scales to point out. Please explain how. Thank you.

To get the scales to point out on the flap you have to alter the way you crochet from the body of the bag. After chaining two, allign the chains with the right side of a dc set. Then do five dc around both the chains and the dc post. After that, it should be normal scales for the rest of the round.

At the end of the body it says to work a row of DC. Is that in every stitch or only where I am already putting the dcs(like between the scales and middle of scales)?

Hi I know you stated to make the straps to the length that is desired but could you please tell what would be a good length & the same for the chain that the bag is done up by as I am not a back pack person but this bag has changed my mind. Thx heaps.

Round 4 doesn't make any sense. If you DC 2 in each you get more than 48st, but if you DC 1, DC 2 (repeat) you still get more than 48 st. What am I doing wrong?

Love this pattern? Just finished it tonight for a Christmas gift. Was wondering if the yarn used in the pic is a varigated skein or did you switch each row? Also was wondering the weight of your yarn cause my bag seems very heavy. Thank u for sharing! !

I'm working this pattern now, and loving it. I was curious is everyone would comment on what yarn weight and needle size they are using, and whether the structure of their bag is slouchy or firm. Thank you. Happy Yarning!

I realized why everyone got confused: People assumed you continued with the 2 DC, 2DC into next DC as Round four, rather than increasing the "spacing" between the increases (if that makes sense)

I wrote down how I prevented the waviness of the bottom:

5: ch 3 (counts as 1 DC), 1 dc in same stitch, 3 DC, 2 DC into next DC, repeat until the end of the round, sl st to top of ch 3
6: ch 3 (counts as 1 DC), 1 dc in same stitch, 4 DC, 2 DC into next DC, repeat until the end of the round, sl st to top of ch 3
7: ch 3 (counts as 1 DC), 1 dc in same stitch, 5 DC, 2 DC into next DC, repeat until the end of the round, sl st to top of ch 3
8: ch 3 (counts as 1 DC), 1 dc in same stitch, 6 DC, 2 DC into next DC, repeat until the end of the round, sl st to top of ch 3
9: ch 3 (counts as 1 DC), 1 dc in same stitch, 7 DC, 2 DC into next DC, repeat until the end of the round, sl st to top of ch 3
10: ch 3 (counts as 1 DC), 1 dc in same stitch, 8 DC, 2 DC into next DC, repeat until the end of the round, sl st to top of ch 3

And I continued the pattern as normal. I'm working this bag and it's wonderfully simple :D

I just finished crocheting this backpack! I used camoflauge yarn for the scales so they look like leaves. I am knitting a few small gnomes and creatures to peek out from under a few leaves. I knitted an I-cord for the cord and I am attaching an acorn I knitted to one end and am trying to find a small pinecone to knit/crochet fir the other end. A perfect enchanted forest backpack! Ty for the pattern and inspiration!

I'm fairly new to crochet, just started this awesome pattern and I got to r4 for the bottom section and after that it started waffling/wavy. Stitch count kept coming out to be way too many. Am I correct to assume that when it says r5-10 you continue as in r4 like 2dc then 2dc in one stitch, but only 12? Or is it 2dc and 2dc in one stitch with an ADDITIONAL 12? Because when I do the additional 12 it adds more than what the end stitch count says it should be. Thank you in advance!

I forgot. I used a "G" hook and added extra rows. Creota is going into 3rd grade. She needed a larger bag.

I made this backpack for my granddaughter; Creota. This is the first pattern, concerning the croc stitch, I understood! I added a crocheted liner to the bag. I find linings add longevity and it stands up. Making it easier to dig through!
Thank-you

Hi Loved the look of this pattern I had to try it. I do have one problem I am on the last row of the bag where it says to dc around -do I just dc in the center of the scale only?? I looked at your picture with the bag open at the end there and thought it looked like that might be it.

Working on round flap and crocodile stitch is going in wrong direction. Not understanding direction

After finishing the first round turn the work so the chain on top of the row is to the right. Put the trebles (DC for US) in from top of row to bottom, then turn work so the top is to the left and work back up. This will make the scale point down. It can get a little unwieldy as the work increases in height but don't try without turning the work as you can get caught in previous stitches and spoil the scales.

I did find a couple of mistakes.
1) On the bottom for rounds 5-10 you have to on round 5 ch 3, dc in same st, 3 dc, 2 dc in same st on round 6 you must ch 3, dc in same st, 4 dc, 2 dc in same st and in each following round add one dc
2) When finishing round 11 you must connect with a sl st

Other than this, this is a GREAT pattern!!

I'm having issues with the bottom as well. Like others have said mine is starting to turn wavy. Even after reading the directions for round 4 it doesn't make sense to me. Round 3 ended up having 36 stitches. There is no way you would end up with 48 stitches doing the directions for round 4? Even if you just do 2DC into each DC from round 3.. that doubles the 36 stitches, making round 4 end up with 72 stitches? I'm confused.

Maybe I don't understand "2DC, 2DC into next stitch". Does that mean you're just supposed to do 2DC into each stitch?

I did the 15 rows on the body and am stuck after the 15th row trying to do the 12th row again. Should the dc be in the center of the previous scale and 2 dc over the previous single crochet? It states to Ch 2 do 1 dc Ch2 skip two st , if skip 2 sts doesn't seem in the right place. HELP
