American Girl Doll Winter Fun Hat

Free Doll Hat Knitting Pattern

This cozy winter hat for the American Girl Doll features vertical cables that are highlighted with a contrast color pinstripe. It was designed to match the American Girl Doll Winter Fun Dress, but it can easily be knitted to match other outfits as well.

Size: fits 18-inch dolls like American Girl, Our Generation and other dolls with similar body.

Materials: Lamb’s Pride Superwash Sport by Brown Sheep (affiliate link) Co.(100% wool 50 gr 180 yrds/165 m) 3 colors: white about 1/2 of ball, red about 1/2 of ball, green. small amount..

Needles: double pointed needles (dpn) US #5 (3.75mm) OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE

Gauge: 24 sts x 32 rows -= 4" x 4" (10 cm x 10 cm) in stockinette st.

Notions:
yarn needle, crochet hook 2.5 mm (the size of the crochet hook is not crutial here, it can be from 2.25 mm to 3.25 mm)

Abbreviations:
k - knit
p - purl
k2 tog - knit 2 together
k3tog - knit 3 together
sm - slip marker
pm - place marker
rm - remove marker

Pattern Notes:

Stockinette in rounds: All rounds knit

Broken Rib in rounds: number of sts multiple 3
Round 1: knit around
Round 2: *p3, k3 - repeat from * around


Short Overview of the Pattern:

The hat is worked in rounds on dpn.

Hat

With red yarn, cast on 60 sts, distribute evenly, 15 sts per needle, on dpn. Close into round, place a marker at the beginning of the round.

Work 5 rounds in stockinette - all rounds knit.

Round 6: *p3, k3 - repeat around.

Round 7: knit around

Repeat rounds 6-7 with red yarn four more times.. Cut red yarn, continue with white yarn.

Repeat round 6-7 with white yarn 12 times.

The next round: *k3tog - repeat from * around = 20 sts. Cut white yarn.

Change to green yarn and knit 2 more rounds. Cut yarn, leaving a 10” long end. Thread the end through the remaining sts and secure.

The hat consists of 20 distinctive alternating columns: 10 columns of stockinnete sts and 10 columns of garter sts . We continue work with stockinette columns.

Attach green yarn to the second stitch in the stockinette column of the last red round. Chain a string of about 6"-7" long. Cut yarn.

Go on, until you have 10 green strings. Tie them together at the top of the hat.

Alternatively, you can work 10 rows of single crochet in the middle sts of the stockinnette collumns. Finish with chains 2" long and tie them on the top.


Finishing:

Weave in all yarn ends.
