Free Hat Knitting Pattern

This classic beret features cables and is the perfect match for the Kid's Vintage Cape!

Skills Required/Techniques Used:
-Knit & purl, cast on & bind off;
-Increasing: make 1 (m1);
-Decreasing: purl 2 together (p2tog), purl 3 together (p3tog);
-Working simple cable;
-Working in the round on circular.

Size: Child/Teen
To fit head sizes: 19" - 20" [48cm - 51cm]

Finished Measurements
Brim circumference: 16" [43cm] blocked and unstretched.
Height from edge of brim to top centre of crown 11" (27.5 cm)

Materials:
Paton (affiliate link)s North America Classic Wool Tweeds worsted weight yarn (90% Wool, 7% Acrylic, 3% Rayon), 210 yards(192 meters)/100 gr, color 84008 Aran – 1 ball

Notions: cable needle, tapestry needle, stitch marker.

Needles: US 7 (4.5mm) circular 32” (80 cm) needles OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE.

Gauge for stockinette st: 17 sts x 26 rows = 4" x 4" (10cm x 10cm)

Abbreviations:
st, sts - stitch, stitches
k - knit
p – purl
p2tog - purl 2 sts together
p3tog - purl 3 sts together
2/2 LC - left cross cable on 4 sts: slip 2 sts purlwise from left needle to cable needle and hold in front of work; knit next 2 sts on left needle; return 2 sts from cable needle to left needle and then knit them
sl wyib - slip one st with yarn in back
sl wyif - slip one st with yarn in front
m1 - make 1 increase - I used the increase described by Elizabeth Zimmerman: make a backward loop over the right-hand needle and in the next row/round purl/knit as a regular stitch.


Pattern Notes:

Reversed Stockinette Stitch: All rounds purl

2/2 Left Cross Cable on 4 sts:
Slip 2 sts purlwise from left needle to cable needle and hold in front of work; knit next 2 sts on left needle; return 2 sts from cable needle to left needle and then knit them

Double knit rib in rounds:
Round 1: *k1, sl wyif - repeat from * around
Round 2: * sl wyib, p1 - repeat from * around


Short Overview of the Pattern:

The beret is worked in the round from the bottom up. The band is worked in double knitting rib. The body and the top of the hat are worked in a combination of cables and reverse stockinette stitch. Increases and decreases are made over reverse stockinette sts between the cables.

Beret

Cast on 90, join and continue to work in rounds, being careful not to twist. Place a marker at the beginning of the round, slip the marker while working.

Round 1: (k1, sl wyif) 45 times. 90 sts.

Round 2: (sl wyib, p1) 45 times.

Rounds 3 - 14: repeat rounds 1 - 2.

Rounds 15 - 16: (p11, k4) 6 times.

Round 17: (p11, 2/2 LC) 6 times.

Round 18 (increase round): (m1, p11, m1, k4) 6 times. 102 sts.

Rounds 19 - 20: (p13, k4) 6 times.

Round 21 (increase round): (m1, p13, m1, 2/2 LC) 6 times. 114 sts.

Rounds 22 - 23: (p15, k4) 6 times.

Round 24 (increase round): (m1, p15, m1, k4) 6 times. 126 sts.

Round 25: (p17, 2/2 LC) 6 times.

Round 26: (p17, k4) 6 times.

Round 27 (increase round): (m1, p17, m1, k4) 6 times. 138 sts.

Round 28: (p19, k4) 6 times. 138 sts.

Round 29: (p19, 2/2 LC) 6 times. 138 sts.

Round 30 (increase round): (m1, p19, m1, k4) 6 times. 150 sts.

Rounds 31 - 32: (p21, k4) 6 times. 150 sts.

Round 33 (increase round): (m1, p21, m1, 2/2 LC) 6 times. 162 sts.

Rounds 34 - 36: (p23, k4) 6 times. 162 sts.

Round 37: (p23, 2/2 LC) 6 times. 162 sts.

Rounds 38 - 40: (p23, k4) 6 times. 162 sts.

Round 41 (decrease round): (p2tog, p19, p2tog, 2/2 LC) 6 times. 150 sts.

Rounds 42 - 44: (p21, k4) 6 times. 150 sts.

Round 45 (decrease round): (p2tog, p17, p2tog, 2/2 LC) 6 times. 138 sts.

Rounds 46 - 48: (p19, k4) 6 times. 138 sts.

Round 49 (decrease ropund): (p2tog, p15, p2tog, 2/2 LC) 6 times. 126 sts.

Rounds 50 - 52: (p17, k4) 6 times.

Round 53 (decrease round): (p2tog, p13, p2tog, 2/2 LC) 6 times. 114 sts.

Rounds 54 - 56: (p15, k4) 6 times.

Round 57 (decrease round): (p2tog, p11, p2tog, 2/2 LC) 6 times. 102 sts.

Rounds 58 - 60: (p13, k4) 6 times.

Round 61 (decrease round): (p2tog, p9, p2tog, 2/2 LC) 6 times. 90 sts.

Rounds 62 - 64: (p11, k4) 6 times.

Round 65 (decrease round): (p2tog, p7, p2tog, 2/2 LC) 6 times. 78 sts.

Rounds 66 - 68: (p9, k4) 6 times.

Round 69 (decrease round): (p2tog, p5, p2tog, 2/2 LC) 6 times. 66 sts.

Rounds 70 - 72: (p7, k4) 6 times.

Round 73 (decrease round): (p2tog, p3, p2tog, 2/2 LC) 6 times. 54 sts.

Rounds 74 - 76: (p5, k4) 6 times.

Round 77 (decrease round): (p2tog, p1, p2tog, k4) 6 times. 42 sts.

Rounds 78 - 80: (p3, k4) 6 times.

Round 81: (p3tog, k4) 6 times. 30 sts.

Cut yarn, leaving a 10" (25 cm) tail. Pull through all the remaining sts and secure.


Finishing

Weave in ends. Block
