Brick Road Cowl

Difficulty level: *** Intermediate

Free Cowl Knitting Pattern

I knitted this cowl with a brick motif to match the Brick Road Seamless Sideways Sweater, but of course it works well on its own. There is also a matching Brick Road Hat.

The cowl features a button closure for a snug fit and stylish look. It is knitted along the long side. This means the length is easy to adjust from the get-go. It features a 2-Color Brick motif.

The selvedge/edge stitches are worked as follows: slip the first stitch knitwise and purl the last one.

Cowl

The cowl is worked flat, back and forth and has a button closure. The button band is worked on short sides of the cowl, by picking up stitches.

Cast on 98 sts (multiple of 10 plus 6 plus 2 selvedge sts). If you would like a larger or smaller cowl, add or subtract multiples of 10 sts.

Rows 1-4: sl1, knit to the last st, p1.
Row 5 (RS, CC): sl1, k 2, *sl2 wyib, k8, repeat from * to last 5 sts, sl2 wyib, k2, p1.
Row 6 (WS, CC): sl1, p2, *sl2 wyif, p8, repeat from * to last 5 sts, sl2 wyif, p3.
Row 7 (RS, CC): repeat row 5.
Row 8 (WS, CC): repeat row 6.
Rows 9-12 (MC): sl1, knit to the last st, p1.
Row 13 (RS, CC): sl1, k7, *sl2 wyib, k8, repeat from * to last 8 sts, k7, p1.
Row 14 (WS, CC): sl1, p7, *sl2 wyif, p8, repeat from * to last 8 sts, p8.
Row 15 (RS, CC): repeat row 13.
Row 16 (WS, CC): repeat row 14.
Rows 17-20 (MC): knit
Repeat rows 5-20 two more times.
Rows 53-54: sl1, knit to the last st, p1.
Bind off. Cut yarn.

Button Band (BB)

With the RS facing, pu&k 25 stitches along the left short end of the cowl and work 10 rows in garter stitch. Bind off.

Pu&k 25 sts along the other short end of the cowl and work 10 rows in garter stitch. In Row 6, work the button holes as follows: sl 1 (selvedge st), k3, *yo, k2tog, k7 - repeat from * 1 more time, yo, k2tog, k3, p1 (selvedge st).

Bind off. Cut yarn.

Finishing:
Weave in all yarn ends. Block the working piece. Sew on 3 buttons on the left button band.

Enjoy!
