Short Overview of the Pattern:

The sweater is worked top-down first back and forth to shape the neck, then in-the-round, without seams. (It will be a good idea to transfer all your work to a couple of long circular needles and try it on from time to time to check how it fits.) The sleeves are worked in-the-round, without seam, on double pointed or circular needles.

SWEATER

Cast on 34 (37, 39, 42, 43) sts and knit 1 row. Count the stitches and place 4 markers as follows:

1 edge st, 1 st (left front), 1 st (raglan line, pm before this stitch), 5 (6, 6, 7, 7) sts (left sleeve), 1 st (second raglan line, pm before this stitch), 16 (17, 19, 20, 21) sts (back), 1 st ( third raglan line, pm before this stitch), 5 (6, 6, 7, 7) sts (right sleeve), 1 st (fourth raglan line, pm before this stitch), 1 sts (right front), 1 edge st.

Work Broken Rib in rows pattern throughout the pattern. Include the increased stitches into pattern.

Row 1 (RS, 1st increase row): k 1, m1, work till marker, *m1, sm, k1 (raglan), m1, work all sts till the next marker, repeat from * 3 times, m1, sm, k1 (raglan), m1, work till last st, m1, p1. (= 44, 47, 49, 52, 53 sts)

Row 2 (WS) and all WS rows: sl 1, work Broken Rib in rows pattern to the last st, p1.

Rows 3-12: Repeat 1st increase row five more times. (= 94, 97, 99, 102, 103 sts).

Repeat rows 1-2 five more times, after each increase row the number of stitches increase by 10. Total in row 12: (= 94, 97, 99, 102, 103 sts).

Row 13/Round 1 (RS): work to the first marker, *m1, sm, k1 (raglan), m1, work all sts till the next marker, repeat from * 3 times, m1, sm, k1 (raglan), m1, work to the end of the row. At the end of the row cast on 6 (7, 9, 10, 11) sts, join into the round and continue to work in rounds. Knit to the first raglan marker. Now the beginning of the round will be at the left front raglan marker. =108 (112, 116, 120, 122) sts.

Round 2 and all even rounds: work Broken Rib pattern in rounds.

Round 3: (2nd increase round): *m1, sm, k1 (raglan), m1, work all sts till the next marker, repeat from * 3 more times.

Round 4 like round 2.

Repeat rounds 3-4 15 (15, 15, 16, 16) more times in every odd round. (=244 (248, 252, 264, 266) sts.)

Next round (3rd increase round): sm, work to next marker, sm, k1 (raglan), m1, work to next marker, m1, sm, k1 (raglan), work to next marker, sm, k1 (raglan), m1, work to next marker, m1. (4 sts increased, 2 at back and 2 at front, no increases at sleeves).

Next round and all even rounds: work Broken Rib pattern in rounds.

Repeat 3rd increase round and next even round 3 (3, 6, 6, 6) more times. 260 (264, 280, 292, 294) sts.

Divide for sleeves and bodice:

Knit the first raglan st. Transfer left sleeve sts (all stitches between the first and the second raglan lines) to a piece of waste yarn, co 6 (8, 9, 11, 14) sts for underarm, work all sts of the back, including the raglan sts, transfer the right sleeve sts to a piece of waste yarn, co 6 (8, 9, 11, 14) sts for underarm, work all front sts. Place a marker after the 3rd (5th, 6th, 7th, 9th) left underarm st to mark the beginning of the round. Slip marker while working. = 160 (166, 184, 194, 202) sts.

Work in Broken Rib pattern 91 (94, 94, 94, 94) more rounds or to desired length, taking into consideration, that there are 10 rounds of 2x2 rib on hem.

Work 10 more rounds in 2x2 rib. Bind off.

Sleeves

Sleeves are worked in rounds on double pointed needles or circular needles 16" long.

Transfer 51 (52, 52, 55, 55) sleeve sts from the waste yarn to the needles and pick up 6 (8, 9, 11, 14) sts over the 6 (8, 9, 11, 14 underarm sts. Place marker after the 3rd (4th, 4th, 5th, 7th) underarm st to mark the beginning of the round. (= 57 (60, 61, 66, 69) sts

Slip the marker while working. Work Broken Rib pattern in rounds for 100 (102, 108, 110, 114) rounds or to desired length, taking into consideration, that there are 10 rounds of 2x2 rib on cuff.

To narrow the sleeve, decrease by 2 sts on both sides of the marker in every 6th round 10 times (20 sts total) as follows:

Decrease round: sm, ssk, work all sts to the last 2, k2tog. Decrease rounds are 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48, 54, 60. (= 37 (40, 41, 46, 49) sts.

Work 10 more rounds in 2x2 rib. Bind off.

1. Why are the 2 selvage stitches needed if the pattern is done in the round?

2. In addition, what do you mean by back and forth if the sweater in done in the round?

3. And why is there a pattern note for Broken Rib in rows and a pattern note for Broken Rib in rounds?

I have trouble understanding your pattern. How do you do increase 10 stitches each unevev row(double increase at raglan stitches) ?

Where is the "back & forth"? Seems all is done in rounds. Starting at neck, do ribbing first? Thanks

Circular or double-pointed needles on the sleeves. The neck ribbing is picked up last and then knit.
