Free Scarf Knitting Pattern

The scarf features a lace leaf panel on the garter stitch background. The edges of the scarf are finished with the lace edging.

Finished measurements: 8" x 68" (20 cm x 170 cm)

Materials: Seasons by Ella Rae bulky weight yarn (76% Acrylic, 14% Wool, 10% Nylon), 262 yards (240 meters) / 100 gr, color #15 - 2 balls

Needles: US 8 (5.0 mm) straight.

Gauge in garter st: 16 sts x 28 rows = 4" x 4" (10cm x 10cm)

Notions: yarn needle, stitch markers (optional).

Abbreviations:
K – knit
P – purl
St – stitch
Sts - stitches
Pu&k - pick up and knit
k2tog – knit 2 together, results in a right-slanting decrease.
cdd - center double decrease: 1) slip 2 sts on the right needle knitwise, 2) knit the next st, 3) insert the left needle in the slipped 2 sts and pass them over the just knitted st. = 2 sts decrease
ssk – slip , slip, knit, results in a left-slanting decrease.
Yo – yarn over
RS – right side
WS – wrong side

Pattern Note:

In the edge pattern yarn over 3 times in WS rows, worked in the RS rows as follows: knit the first yo st, purl the second yo st, knit the last yo st.


Scarf

Cast on 29 sts: 4 sts right edge - 21 sts leaf pattern - 4 sts left edge. You might wish to place markers between the leaf panel and the edges, but this is not necessary. If you do, slip markers while working.

Row 1 (RS): K10, (k2tog, yo) twice, k1, (yo, ssk) twice, k9, p1. (=29 sts)

Row 2 (WS): K2, yo 3 times, k10, p5, k10, yo 3 times, k1, p1. (=35 sts)

Row 3 (RS): K3, p1, k8, k2tog, yo, k2tog, (k1, yo) twice, k1, ssk, yo, ssk, k8, p1, k2, p1.

Row 4 (WS): K14, p7, k13, p1.

Row 5 (RS): K11, k2tog, yo, k2tog, k2, yo, k1, yo, k2, ssk, yo, ssk, k10, p1.

Row 6 (WS): Bind off 3 sts, k10, p9, k12, p1. (=32 sts)

Row 7 (RS): Bind off 3 sts, k7, k2tog, yo, k2tog, k3, yo, k1, yo, k3, ssk, yo, ssk, k6, p1. (= 29 sts)

Row 18 (WS): Bind off 3 sts, p4, k4, p13, k10, p1. ( = 32 sts)

Row 19 (RS): Bind off 3 sts, k8, yo, ssk, k9, k2tog, yo, k7, p1. (= 29 sts)

Row 20 (WS): Repeat row 8. (= 35 sts)

Row 21 (RS): K3, p1, k8, yo, ssk, k7, k2tog, yo, k8, p1, k2, p1.

Row 22 (WS): K13, p9, k12, p1.

Row 23 (RS): K13, yo, ssk, k5, k2tog, yo, k12, p1.

Row 24 (WS): Bind off 3 sts, p4, k7, p7, k13, p1. (= 32 sts)

Row 25 (RS): Bind off 3 sts, k11, yo, ssk, k3, k2tog, yo, k10, p1. (=29 sts)

Row 26 (WS): Repeat row 2. (= 35 sts)

Row 27 (RS): K3, p1, k11, yo, ssk, k1, k2tog, yo, k11, p1, k2, p1.

Row 28 (WS): K16, p3, k15, p1.

Row 29 (RS): K16, yo, cdd, yo, k15, p1.

Row 30 (WS): Bind off 3 sts, p4, k10, p1, k16, p1. (= 32 sts)

Row 31 (RS): Bind off 3 sts, k10, (k2tog, yo) twice, k1, (yo, ssk) twice, k9, p1.

Repeat rows 2-31 thirteen times or to desired length.

In the last repeat work row 31 as follows: Bind off 3 sts, k to the last st, p1. Bind off.

Edge lace on short sides:

The short sides of the scarf are finished with knitted-on edging. The last st of each odd/RS row of the edging is worked ssk with one picked-up stitch on the scarf. Hold the scarf with RS facing.

Cast on 5 sts

Row 1 (RS): knit 4, slip the last st to the right needle, with the tip of the left needle pick up a stitch on a short side of the scarf, knit it, pass the slipped st over it.

Row 2 (WS): k3, yo 3 times, k2. (= 8 sts)

Row 3 (RS): k3, p1, k3, pu&k, ssk.

Row 4, 5 and 6 knit, in row 5 ssk the last st and the picked st on the scarf.

Row 7: bind off 3 sts, k3, pu&k, ssk

Repeat rows 2-7 to the end of the scarf edge. Bind off on any row as soon as the short edge of the scarf ends.

Repeat for the other short side of the scarf.



Finishing

Weave in all yarn ends.
