Two-Hour Shawl with Beaded Fringe

Free Shawl Knitting Pattern

The shawl is worked from the inner edge out. It has crescent form and is shaped with short rows. The knotted fringe is a great last touch that gives it a classic, Victorian look and feel.

Finished measurements: 108" (274 cm) long and 16" (42 cm) wide at the widest part

Materials:
Quellon Hand Dyed by Araucania (affiliate link) worsted weight chenille yarn, 150m (161 yd) / 100 gr, color 5- 2 skeins
Markers or small safety pins, 50 6mm beads (optional)

Needles: US 15 (10 mm) circular 60" long

Gauge: 6 sts = 4" (10 cm)

Pattern:
Garter Stitch- all rows knit

Wrap and turn in the short rows:
With yarn in front sl 1 stitch to the right needle.
Move yarn between the needles to the back.
Slip the stitch back to the left needle.
Turn the work and bring yarn back to the wrong side between the needles.

 


Directions:

Note: short rows in the pattern have same numbers as full rows.

Cast on 150 sts. Knit row 1 and 2.
Row 3: knit 147, wrap and turn. Place a marker on the 147th stitch.
Row 4: knit 144, wrap and turn. Place a marker on the 144th stitch.
Go on knitting, stopping in each row 3 sts before the marker of the previous row, wrap and turn, place marker.
Work 50 short rows in this way.
Row 51: Knit to the end of the row, increase by 1 st at the marked sts by knitting to the front and back of the marked stitch; remove the markers.
Row 52: knit back to the middle of the row (100 sts). Knit to the end of the row, increase by 1 st at the marked sts by knitting to the front and back of the marked stitch; remove the markers.
Row 53: knit to the end of the row.
Bind off.

Finishing

Knotted fringe with beads:
Cut the remaining yarn into strands 20" long. Working with one strand at a time: fold the strand in half so that the ends are even; with the help of a crochet hook draw the middle loop of the strand through the edge of the shawl, then pass the ends of the strand rhough the loop and fasten. Make fringes 1" apart.The number of fringes should be a multiple of 4 plus 1.
Each fringe has 2 ends.

Row 1:
*Take one strand of the first and one strand of the second fringe. Insert the ends into a bead, tie a knot under the bead at about 1 1/2" from the shawl's edge.
Take the second strand of the second fringe and one strand of the third fringe. Tie a knot about 1 1/2" from the shawl's edge.
Take the second strand of the third fringe and one strand of the fourth fringe. Tie a knot about 1 1/2" from the shawl's edge. Repeat from *  to the end.

Row 2:
Take the one remaining strand from the first fringe, and one strand protruding from the first knot in row 1. Make a knot about 1 1/2" from the previous knot.
Take a strand from the first knot and one strand from the second knot. Make a knot 1 1/2" from the previous knot.
*Take one strand from the second knot and one end from the third knot. Insert the ends into a bead,and make a knot about 1 1/2" from the previous knot.
Take one strand from the third fringe and one strand from the fourth knot and make a knot about 1 1/2" from the previous knot.
Take one strand from the fourth fringe and one strand from the fifth fringe and make a knot about 1 1/2" from the previous knot.
Repeat from * to the end.

Row 3:
Tie the ends of the neighboring fringes into knots at about 1 1/2' from the previous knots.
