Ribbed Baby Earflap Hat

Free Baby Hat Knitting Pattern

Size: 16" (18", 20") head circumference

Materials: Rowan Purelife Organic Wool DK weight yarn, 137 yards (125 meters) / 50 gr, color 603 Black Tea - 1.5 balls.

Needles: US size 4 (3.5 mm) circular, cable needle

Gauge for rib 1x1: 20 st x 28 rows = 4" x 4" (10 cm x 10 cm)

Make 1 increase (M1) - I used the increase described by Elizabeth Zimmerman
Make a backward loop over the right-hand needle and in the next row purl as a regular stitch.

Directions:

Earflap
Cast on 4 sts and work I-cord for 4" (10 cm)
Row 1: k1, m1, k1, m1, k1, m1, k1
Row 2: k1, p1 to the end of the row.
Row 3: sl1, *k1, p1 to the end of the row
Row 4: sl1, p1, k1 to the end of the row.
Row 5: sl 1, k1, m1, p1, k1, p1, m1, k1, p1
Row 6: sl1, p1, k2, p1, k2, p2.
Row 7: sl1, k1, p2, k1, p2, k1, p1
Row 8: sl1, p1, k2, p1, k2, p2.
Row 9: sl1, k1, p1, m1, p1, k1, p1, m1, p1, k1, p1
Row 10: sl 1, *p1, k1, repeat to the end of the row.
Rows 11 and 13: sl1, *k1, p1 repeat to the end of the row.
Row 12 and 14: repeat row 10.

Work the 15th row of the second earflap, at the end of the row cast on 18 (23, 28) sts with with single cast on, work the sts of the first earflap, cast on 40 (45, 50) sts with single cast on, join and continue to work rib 1x1 in rounds. Total 80 (90, 100) sts.
Work rib for 32 (36, 40) rounds.

16" size
Round 33: [*p1, k1, repeat 4 times, k2tog], repeat 8 times = 72 sts
Round 34: {*p1, k1, repeat 3 times, p1, k2tog], repeat 8 times = 64 sts
Round 35:  [*p1, k1, repeat 3 times, k2tog], repeat 8 times = 56 sts
Round 36: {*p1, k1, repeat 2 times, p1, k2tog], repeat 8 times = 48 sts
Round 37:  [*p1, k1, repeat 2 times, k2tog], repeat 8 times = 40 sts
Round 38: {*p1, k1, p1, k2tog], repeat 8 times = 32 sts
Round 39:  [*p1, k1, k2tog], repeat 8 times = 24 sts
Round 40:  [*p1, k2tog], repeat 8 times = 16 sts
