Free Crochet Scarf Pattern

Size: 7" (18 cm) x 68" (173 cm)

Materials: Red Heart (affiliate link) Boutique Midnight aran weight yarn, color 1942 Serenade 140 m (153 yds) / 70g (2.5 oz.) - 2 balls (A)
Red Heart (affiliate link) Boutique Midnight aran weight yarn, color 1945 Shadow 140 m (153 yds) / 70g (2.5 oz.) - 1.5 ball (B)

Hook: 6.5 mm (K)

Gauge: one "wheel" - 5 cm (5")

Abbreviations:

Cl - cluster, explained below

ch - chain

tch - turning chain, chain used in the begining of a row, it's not counted as a pattern stitch.

sc - single crochet

dc - double crochet

yo - yarn over

st - stitch

tr - treble crochet =yarn over (yo) twice, insert hook in indicated stitch; yo and draw through the stitch only; yo again and draw through the first 2 loops only; yo again and draw through the next 2 loops only; yo again and draw through the last 2 loops on the hook.

Catherine Wheel Pattern:
Multiple of 10 sts + 6 (add 1 tch to base chain)

Cl - cluster = *work 2 yo, insert hook, yo, draw loop through the work only, yo, draw through 2 loops on the hook, yo, draw through 2 loops on the hook (you have 2 loops on the hook), rep from * over the number of sts indicated; yo, draw through all loops on the hook

Row 1: 1 sc in 2nd ch from the hook. 1sc into the next ch, *skip 3 chs, 7tr into the next ch, skip 3 chs, 1 sc into each of next 3 chs - rep from * to last 4 chs, skip 3 chs, 4tr into last ch, turn.

Row 2: ch 1 (tch), 1 sc into each of the next 2 sts, * ch 3, 1 CL over next 7 sts, ch 3, 1 sc into each of the next 3 sts; rep from * to last 4 sts, ch 3. 1 Cl over last 4 sts, skip tch , turn.

Row 3: ch 4 (count as 1 tr), 3 tr into first st. *skip ch-3-space, 1 sc into each of the next 3 sc, skip ch-3-space, 7 tr into loop which closed next CL; rep from * to end finishing with: skip ch-3-space, 1 sc into each of last 2 sc, skip tch, turn.

Row 4: ch 4 (count as 1 tr), skip first st, 1 CL over next 3 sts, * ch 3, 1 sc into each next 3 sts, ch 3, 1 CL over next 7 sts, rep from * finishing with: ch 3, 1 sc into each of the last 2 sts, turn.

Row 5: ch 1 (tch), 1 sc into each of next 2 sc, *skip ch-3-space, 7 tr into loop which closed CL, skip ch-3-space, 1 sc into each of next 3 sc; rep from * ending with: skip ch-3-space, 4 tr into top of the last st, turn.

Repeat rows 2-5.

Directions:

With color A chain 177 (176 for the pattern, 1 tch). Insert hook in the second ch from hook, work sc in each chain across = 176 sc, ch 1 (tch), turn,
Work row 1 of the pattern. Fasten off, cut yarn.
With color B work rows 2 and 3 of the pattern. Fasten off, cut yarn.
With color A work rows 4 and 5 of the pattern. Fasten off, cut yarn.
With color B work rows 2 and 3 of the pattern. Fasten off, cut yarn
With color A work row 4 of the pattern, ch 1, turn,
Work 1 sc in each stitch of the row = 176 sc. Do not cut yarn. Go on along the short edge of the scarf:

Row 1: ch 3 (count as 1 dc), * ch 1, skip 1 stitch, 1 dc in the next st - rep from * 10 times, ch 1 (tch), turn.
Row 2: 1 sc in each stitch across = 20 sc, ch 1 (tch),
Row 3: repeat row 1, in the end of the row turn onto the long edge of the scarf, work sc into each s across till the next short edge, ch 1 (tch), turn onto the second short edge:
work Rows 1-3 on the short edge as described above. Finishing row 3, turn onto the long edge of the scarf and work 1 row of sc across the edge.

Fasten off, cut yarn.

Finishing:

Weane in yarn ends. Make fringe into ch-1-spaces along the short edges
