American Girl Doll Chevron Skirt

Free Doll Skirt Knitting Pattern

The skirt is worked bottom-up in chevron, then in garter stitch patterns back-and-forth on straight needles. Then the working piece is blocked, the back seam is closed. The belt is worked in 1x1 rib on double pointed needles.

Skills Required/Techniques Used:

-Decreasing (right-slant decrease: knit 2 together, left-slanting decrease: slip, slip, knit)
-Working in the round on double pointed or circular needles

Materials: Knit Picks Palette 100% Peruvian Highland Wool, 231 yards/50grams, fingering weight, main color (MC) Marble Heather 1 ball and contrast color (CC) Blush 1 ball

Needles: US #1.5 (2.50mm) needles or size needed to obtain gauge and US # 1 (2.25 mm) double pointed needles (DPN)

Gauge 28 sts x 48 rows = 4" x 4" (10 x 10 cm) in garter stitch.

Notions: Tapestry needle.

Abbreviations:
dpn – double pointed needles
K – knit
P – purl
St – stitch
Sts – stitches
co – cast on
RS – right side
WS – wrong side
ssk – slip , slip, knit, results in a left-slanting decrease.
k2tog – knit 2 together, results in a right-slanting decrease.
cdd - center double decrease: 1) slip 2 sts on the right needle knitwise, 2) knit the next st, 3) insert the left needle in the slipped 2 sts and pass them over the just knitted st. = 2 sts decrease


Pattern notes:

Garter stitch:
All rows knit

1x1 rib in rounds
Multiple of 2
All rounds: *k1, p1 - repeat from * to the end of the rounds.

Chevron Pattern

Multiple of 12 sts + 3 sts
Row 1 (RS, decrease row): k 1, ssk, *k 9, cdd repeat from * to the last 12 sts: k 9, k2tog, k 1.
Row 2 (WS, increase row): k 1, *p1, k 4, (k1, yo, k1) in the next st, k 4, repeat from * to the last 2 sts, p1, k1.
Repeat rows 1 and 2.

The selvedge/edge stitches are worked as follows: slip the first stitch knitwise and purl the last one.


Skirt

With main color (grey) and larger needles (US # 1.5 (2.5 mm), cast on 125 sts, these include: 12x10 + 3 (for chevron pattern) + 2 (edge sts). Leave a tail 12”-15” long, coil it so it’s not in your way. Work rows 1-8 in main color, 9-12 in color A (CA), rows 13-16 in MC, rows 17-20 in CA, the rest of the work in MC.

Foundation row (WS): knit 125.

Row 1 RS (decrease row) : sl 1 (edge), k1, ssk, *k9, cdd - repeat from * 9 times, k9, k2tog, k1, p1 (edge) . = 105 sts

Row 2 WS (increase round): sl 1 (edge), k1, *p1, k4, (k1, yo, k1) in the next st, k4 - repeat from * to last 3 sts, p1, k1, p1 (edge) = 125 sts

Repeat rows 1 and 2 fourteen more times.

Row 31 (RS): repeat row 1. = 105 sts

Row 32 (WS): sl 1 (edge), k 1, *p1, k 9, - repeat from * to last 3 sts: p1, k1, p1 (edge).

Row 33 (RS): sl 1, k 103, p1.

Repeat rows 32-33 three more times.

Row 40 (WS) - repeat row 32.

Row 41 (RS, decrease row): sl 1 (edge), k1, ssk, *k7, cdd - repeat from * 9 times, k7, k2tog, k1, p1 (edge). = 85 sts

Row 42 (WS): sl 1 (edge), k1, *p1, k7 - repeat from * to the last 3 sts: p1, k1, p1.

Do not take the working piece off the needles and do not cut yarn. Block the working piece.



Using the cast-on tail, sew the back seam up.

Transfer the sts to the dpn needles, distribute the sts evenly. Join the work into round by knitting the last and the first sts of the row together. = 84 sts

Work 6 rounds of 1x1 rib. Bind off. Cut yarn.


Finishing:
Weave in all yarn ends.
