Meadow Colors Modular Shawl

Free Shawl Crochet Pattern

You can purchase this shawl from my Etsy shop.

Although this shawl looks like a traditional design that consists of separate square motifs combined into a shawl, it is not! It is actually crocheted seamlessly. The blocks feature a simple filet crochet motif.

I used 6 yarn colors plus black yarn for the outline of the blocks, but you can use anywhere from 2 to as many as you like.

Size: width - 96" (240 cm), depth - 46" (115 cm)

Materials: Knit Picks (affiliate link) Palette fingering weight 100% wool yarn, 231 yds (210 m)/ 50 g, 2-3 balls of each color if using 6 colors.

Short Overview of the pattern

Although the shawl looks like consisting of separate blocks, it is crocheted seamlessly and consists of diagonal rows of filet crochet blocks. Each row of blocks is crocheted in one of the MC yarns and outlined with one row of sc in black yarn. I used 6 MC yarns in the sample on the pictures. You can use from 2 to as many as you like. The outline color should have the most contrast possible (black, dark blue, dark brown, etc). The provided chart shows the beginning tree squares of the shawl plus the triangle block for the last row.

Row 3: ch 4 (counts as 1 dc and 1 ch), skip ch1-sp, 1 dc in each of next 3 dc, *ch 1, skip 1 dc, 1 dc in next dc, from * repeat 5 more times, 1 dc in each of next 2 dc, ch 1, skip ch1-sp, 1 dc in last dc.

Black Edging around the blocks (black on the chart)

With black yarn.
Attach black yarn to the beginning of the 1st row of the block and continue to work along its right side:
*2 sc in the ch3-sp, 2 sc in the last dc of the next row, from * repeat 4 more times, 2 sc in ch 4-sp of the last row of the block. Turn and continue to work along the top side of the block: 2 sc more in the same ch-4-sp of the last row of the block, *1 sc in next dc, 1 sc in next ch-1-sp, from * repeat to the end of the block’s last row. Tie off. Cut black yarn.

Connecting Block (green on the chart)

With the second MC yarn

Attach yarn to the starting ch of the First Block (or to the 1st Connecting Block of the next rows of blocks).

With the second MC yarn. The top block is identical to the first block. The only difference is in Row 1: in the top block, the base of row 1 is not a chain, but black edging row.

Next, work Black Edging over Connecting Block and Top Block continuously.

The 2nd diagonal row is completed (the 1st being the First Block).

Change to the third MC yarn and work 2 Connecting Blocks and 1 Top Block. The second Connecting Block is worked over the Black Edging sts, instead of the foundation chain.

Work Black Edging over 2 Connecting Blocks and 1 Top Block. The third diagonal row is completed.

Continue to work blocks, adding 1 Connecting Block and changing the MC yarn in every diagonal row of blocks, working Black Edging over each new block row. The first Connecting Block is always started over foundation chain and subsequent Connecting Blocks’ first row is worked over Black Edging’s scs.

Work total 18 rows of blocks or to desired size. There are 17 Connecting Blocks and 1 Top Block in the last row. Work Black Edging.

Next, work the last row of the shawl, working Triangles.

With the next MC yarn

Attach yarn to the starting ch of the previous Connecting Block.

Ch 21
Row 1: ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), ch 1, skip 1, 1 dc in each of next 17 chs, ch 1, skip 1, 1 dc in last ch, sl st to the black edging of the corresponding row of the first block.

Row 2: ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), sl st to the black edging of the corresponding row of the first block, ch 1, skip ch1-sp1, 1 dc in each of next 15 dcs, skip dc, 1 tr in next dc. Turn.

Row 3: ch 4, 1 dc in next dc, *ch 1, dc, 1 dc in next dc, from * repeat 5 more times, 1 dc in each of next 2 dc, ch 1, skip ch1-sp, 1 dc in last dc, sl st to the black edging of the corresponding row of the first block.

Row 1: *1 dc in each of next 3 sc, skip 1 sc, ch 1, from * repeat around the shawl. Work 6 dc in same sc at the corners of the shawl.
Row 2: * 1 dc in next dc, ch 1, skip 1 dc, 1 dc in each of next 3 dc, from * repeat around the shawl. Tie off.
