Short Overview of the Pattern:

The top consists of 2 identical rectangular pieces for back and front, worked in lace pattern, sideways. Each piece is finished with 2 rows of dc and 1 row of sc around the perimeter of the rectangle. The pieces, front and back, are connected by the last sc row of the second piece.

TOP

Chain 111 (111, 111, 119, 119, 123).

Row 1: ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), 1 dc in the 4th ch from the hook, *ch 3, skip 3, 1 dc in next ch, ch 2, skip 1, 1 sc in next ch, ch 2, skip 1, 1 dc in next ch, repeat from * to the last 5 ch of the row, ch 3, skip 3, 1 dc in next st, 1 dc in last ch. Turn.

Row 2: ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), *1 dc in next st, ch 2, 1 sc in ch-3-sp, ch 2, 1 dc in next dc, ch 3, repeat from * to the last ch-3-sp, 1 dc in next dc, ch 2, 1 sc in ch-3-sp, 1 dc in next dc, 1 dc in last dc.

Row 3: ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), *1 dc in next dc, ch 3, 1 dc in next dc, ch 2, 1 sc in next ch-3-sp, ch 2, repeat to the last 2 dc, ch 3, 1 dc in next dc, 1 dc in last dc.

Repeat rows 2-3 until piece measures 18 (20, 22, 24, 26, 28) inches [45 (50, 55, 60, 65, 70) cm]. Don’t tie off.

Using a new ball of yarn, work another piece in the same way as described above.

Finishing

Work 2 rows of dc around each piece. When working over the last worked row of the lace pattern, work as follows: 3 dc, over ch-3-sp, 1 dc in next dc, 1 dc in ch-2-sp, 1 tr in sc, 1 dc in ch-2-sp, 1 dc in next dc.

Work 1 row of sc around the first piece. While working in the corners, increase 3 times for 1 dc.

Lay out the pieces WS to WS. Start working sc row around the second piece. While working this sc row, connect it to the first piece by working the sc, inserting the hook in the dc of the 2nd piece and in the corresponding sc of the 1st piece.

Connect the pieces as follows: starting from the bottom edge and working along the side edge up to the top edge, make sc into the side edge of the second piece only for 5 inches (12.5) cm, leaving the unconnected space for the slits, then connect the pieces until 14 inches (35 cm) left to the top edge for an oversized armhole (if you want a smaller armhole, connect the pieces until 10-12 inches left to the top edge). Continue to work sc in the second piece only.

Turn to work the top edge, leaving 2.5 inches from the side edge unconnected for the shoulder slits, then connect the shoulders for 3 inches, continue to work sc in the second piece only until 5.5 inches remains to the other side edge, connect the pieces along the next 3 inches and leave 2.5 inches at the end of the top edge unconnected. For the other side, leave 14 inches (or less) unconnected, then connect the pieces until 5 inches remains to the bottom edge.

Finish the sc row of the second piece.

Weave in ends.

Have fun!
