Free Doll Cardigan Crochet Pattern

Introducing the Granny Stitch Cardigan, a timeless crochet piece tailored perfectly for your beloved 18-inch doll. Crafted in the ever-charming and classic granny stitch pattern, this cardigan not only boasts of vintage charm but is also a delight to create.

Skills Required/Techniques Used:
- Basic crochet stitches: chain (ch), single crochet (sc), double crochet (dc), half double crochet (hdc), slip stitch (sl.st)

FINISHED SIZE: to fit 18-inch dolls, such as American Girl Doll, etc.

Materials: Aunt Lydia (affiliate link)'s Classic Crochet Thread size #10 (100% mercerized cotton), colors: goldenrod – 1 ball

Hook: 1.75 mm OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE.

Gauge: 12 dc x 6 rows = 2" x 2" (5 cm x 5 cm)

Notions:
- 3-4 small buttons (optional)
- Tapestry needle to weave in yarn ends
- Stitch marker (optional) - for your convenience place the marker on the right side (RS) of the working piece.
- Sewing needle and thread of matching color to attach buttons if you use ones

Abbreviations:
st, sts - stitch, stitches
sc - single crochet
dc - double crochet
hdc - half double crochet
ch, chs - chain, chains
sp - space
sl.st. - slip stitch
shell - here (2 dc, ch2, 2 dc) in the indicated stitch
Shell-in-shell - here a shell in the ch-2-space of the shell in the previous row
RS - right side
WS - wrong side

Short Overview of the Pattern:

The cardi is worked top down as one piece. The yoke is worked back and forth, with 4 raglan lines and increases on these lines shaped by shells. The button bands are formed by 3 dc in the beginning and end of each row. After the yoke is done, the back, 2 fronts and 2 sleeves are worked separately, then sewn by side lines.

Chain 64 and work a foundation row of 64 sc.
Row 1 (RS): ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in each of the next 2 sc, ch 2, skip 2 sc, 1 dc in each of the next 2 sc, ch 2, skip 2 sc, shell in the next sc (2dc, ch2, 2dc), [(ch2, skip 2 sc, 1 dc in each of the next 2 sc) x 3 times, ch2, skip 2 sc, shell in the next sc] x 3 times, ch 2, skip 2 sc, 1 dc in each of the next 2 sc, ch2, skip 2 sc, 1 dc in each of the last 3 sc.



Row 2 (WS): ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc into each of the next 2dc, (3 dc in ch-2-space, ch2, skip 2 dc) x 2 times, shell-in-shell (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc in the ch-2-space of the shell from the previous row, [(ch2, 3 dc in the ch-2 space) x 4 times ch 2, shell-in-shell] x 3 times, (ch2, 3 dc in ch-2-space) x 2 times, 1 dc in each of the last 3 dc.



Row 3: ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in each of the next 2 dc, (ch2, 3 dc in ch-2-space) x 2 times, ch2, shell-in-shell, [(ch2, 3 dc in ch-2-space) x 5 times, ch 2, shell-in-shell] x 3 times, (ch2, 3 dc in ch-2-space) x 2 times, ch2, 1 dc in each of the last 3 dc.

Divide for sleeves and bodice

Starting with the next row, the fronts, sleeves and back are worked separately in a clockwise order.


Left Front is worked from the beg.(left bb) up to the first shell and back.



Row 1(RS): ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in each of the next 2 dc, (ch2, 3 dc in ch-2-space) x 5 times, 1 dc in the each of the first 2 dc of the shell, 1 dc in the ch-2-space, turn.

Row 2: ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in each of the next 2 dc, (ch2, 3 dc in ch-2-space ) x 5 times, 1 dc in the last 3 dc, turn.

Repeat rows 1-2 three more times, then repeat row 1 one more time (8 rows in all). Cut thread.


Left Sleeve is worked between the first and the second shells.

Holding the working piece right side facing, attach thread to the first dc of the second group of dcs in the shell (right after the ch-2-space of the shell).

Row 1 (RS): ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in next dc, ( 3 dc in ch-2-space, ch2) x 10 times, 3 dc in the last ch-2 -space,1 dc in the each of the first 2 dc of the shell, turn.

Row 2: ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in the next dc, (ch2, 3 dc in ch-2-space) x 10 times, ch2, 1 dc in the each of the last 2 dc, turn.

Repeat rows 1-2 one more time.

Row 5 (RS): ch2 (counts as 1 hdc), *1 hdc in ch2-space, 1 hdc in each of the next 3 dc - repeat from * across the row. Cut thread.




Back is worked between the second and the third shells.

Holding the working piece right side facing, attach thread to the ch-2-space of the second shell).

Row 1(RS): ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in each of the next 2 dc, ( 3 dc in ch-2-space, ch2) x 10 times, 3 dc in ch-2-space, 1 dc in the each of the first 2 dc of the shell, 1 dc in the ch-2-space of the third shell, turn.

Row 2: ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in each of the next 2 dc, (ch2, 3 dc in ch-2-space) x 10 times, 1 dc in the each of the last 3 dc, turn.

Repeat rows 1-2 three more times, then repeat row 1 one more time. Cut thread.


Right Sleeve is worked between the third and the forth shells.

Holding the working piece right side facing, attach thread to the first dc of the second group of dcs in the third shell (right after the ch-2-space of the shell).

Row 1 (RS): ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in the next dc, ( 3 dc in ch-2-space, ch2) x 10 times, 3 dc in the last ch-2 -space,1 dc in the each of the first 2 dc of the forth shell, turn.

Row 2: ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in the next dc, (ch2, 3 dc in ch-2-space) x 10 times, ch2, 1 dc in the each of the last 2 dc, turn.

Repeat rows 1-2 one more time.

Row 5 (RS): ch2 (counts as 1 hdc), *1 hdc in ch2-space, 1 hdc in each of the next 3 dc - repeat from * across the row. Cut thread.


Right Front is worked between the forth shell and the right bb.

Holding the working piece right side facing, attach thread to the ch-2-space of the forth shell).

Row 1(RS): ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in each of the next 2 dc, (3 dc in ch-2-space, ch2 ) x 5 times, 1 dc in the each of the last 3 dc turn.

Row 2: ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in each of the next 2 dc, (3 dc in ch-2-space. ch2 ) x 5 times, 1 dc in each of the last 3 dc, turn.

Repeat rows 1-2 three more times, then repeat row 1 one more time (8 rows in all). Cut thread.




Finishing:

Weave in all yarn ends. Block the working piece. if needed. Fold the piece in half, right sides inside, align the edges of the sleeves and sides. Sew the side seams together . Work a row of hdc along the hem. (photo7) Sew on the buttons on the left bb, if needed.
