Short Overview of the Pattern

The rug is worked sideways, in single crochet (sc) with spike sc stitches to form a visual bias pattern. Every row begins on the right side and at the end of the row the yarn is cut to make a fringe. The CC is changed every other row. All rows are worked in one direction, you do not turn the working piece.

Rug

With MC make a slip knot on the hook, leaving a 2” (5 cm) end, chain 46 or as much as the desired width of the rug. Secure the end of chain and cut the yarn, leaving a 2” (5 cm) end.

NOTE: The beginning and end of the rows is the same for each row as described in row 1.

Row 1: leave a 2” (5 cm) end of yarn, make a slip knot on the hook, remove hook, insert it in first ch, put slip knot back on hook and pull it through, ch 1, 1 sc in each ch across, finish off, leaving a 2” (5 cm) end. Do not turn.

Row 2 with CC: join yarn in first st as described in row 1, 1 sc in next sc, skip next sc, Ssc under sc 1 row below, *1 sc in each of next five sc, skip next sc, Ssc under sc 1 row below, from * repeat to the end of the row, end with 1 sc, cut off yarn, leaving 2” (5 cm) end. Do not turn.

Row 3 with MC: join yarn in first st as described in row 1, 1 sc in the next sc, 1 sc in the Ssc, skip next sc, Ssc under sc 1 row below, *1 sc into each of next 4 sc, 1 sc in the Ssc, skip next sc, Ssc under sc 1 row below, from * repeat to the end of the row, end with 1 sc, cut off yarn, leaving 2” (5 cm) end. Do not turn.

Row 4 with CC: join yarn in first st, 1 sc in the next two sc, 1 sc in the Ssc, skip 1 sc, Ssc under sc 1 row below, *1 sc into each of next 4 sc, 1 sc in the Ssc, skip next sc, Ssc under sc 1 row below, from * repeat to the end of the row, cut off yarn, leaving 2” (5 cm) end. Do not turn.

Rows 5-32: repeat row 4, but work one more sc at the beginning of each row before working Ssc. This moves all sc stitches over one st in each row, placing them on a diagonal.

Work odd rows with MC, work even rows with CC.

Row 33 with MC: leave a 2” (5 cm) end of yarn, make a slip knot on the hook, remove hook, insert it in first ch, put slip knot back on hook and pull it through, ch 1, 1 sc in each ch across, finish off, leaving a 2” (5 cm) end.

Finishing

Weave in ends. Block. Trim fringe to desired length.

Have fun!
