Walk in the Park Raffia Sun Hat

Free Hat Crochet Pattern

This sun hat is a walk in the park to crochet. Also, it would be perfect for a walk in the park! (Sorry, sorry)

It's worked from the crown out towards the brim. The top of the hat is worked in single crochet, the brim is worked in V-sts.

As the hat uses raffia yarn, it will keep its shape without milliner's wire.

Size: 21.5" (54 cm)

Materials: Ispie Rayon Raffia worsted weight yarn (100% Rayon), 100 yards(92 meters), color Oatmeal – 3 spools (MC)
Ispie Rayon Raffia worsted weight yarn (100% Rayon), 100 yards(92 meters)/, color Brown – 1 spool (CC)

Hook: E (3.5 mm) OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE

Gauge: 10 sc x 13 rows = 2” x 2” (5 cm x 5 cm) in single crochet

Abbreviations (USA):
Dc - double crochet
Sc – single crochet
Ch – chain
Chs - chains
st - stitch
sts - stitches
sl st - slip stitch
V-st - V-stitch: 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc into the same st or in the V-st ch-1-space.
V-st2 - V-stitch: 1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc into the same st or in the V-st2 ch-2-space.
MC - main color
CC - contrast color
ch-1-sp - chain-1-space


HAT

The hat is worked top down in rounds. The top of the hat is worked in single crochet, the brim is worked in V-sts.

Crown

Chain 6, join with sl st to make a ring.

Round 1: ch1, 8 sc into the ring, sl st to ch1. =8 sc.

Round 2: ch1, *2 sc into next sc, from * repeat to the end of the round, sl st to ch1. =16 sc.

Round 3: ch1, *1 sc into next sc, 2 sc into next sc, from * repeat to the end of the round, sl st to ch1. =24 sc.

Round 4: ch1, *1 sc into each of the next 2 sc, 2 sc into next sc, from * repeat to the end of the round, sl st to ch1. =32 sc.

Round 5: ch1, *1 sc into each of the next 3 sc, 2 sc into next sc, from * repeat to the end of the round, sl st to ch1. =40 sc.

Round 6: ch1, *1 sc into next sc, from * repeat to the end of the round, sl st to ch1.

Round 7: ch1, *1 sc into each of the next 4 sc, 2 sc into next sc, from * repeat to the end of the round, sl st to ch1.= 48 sc.

Round 8: ch1, *1 sc into each of the next 7 sc, 2 sc into next sc, from * repeat to the end of the round, sl st to ch1. = 54 sc.

Round 9: ch1, *1 sc into each of the next 8 sc, 2 sc into next sc, from * repeat to the end of the round, sl st to ch1. =60 sc.

Round 10: ch1, *1 sc into each of the next 9 sc, 2 sc into next sc, from * repeat to the end of the round, sl st to ch1. =66 sc.

Round 11: ch1, *1 sc into each of the next 10 sc, 2 sc into next sc, from * repeat to the end of the round, sl st to ch1. =72 sc.

Round 12: ch1, *1 sc into each of the next 11 sc, 2 sc into next sc, from * repeat to the end of the round, sl st to ch1. =78 sc.

Round 13: ch1, *1 sc into next sc, from * repeat to the end of the round, sl st to ch1.

Round 14: ch1, *1 sc into each of the next 12 sc, 2 sc into next sc, from * repeat to the end of the round, sl st to ch1. =84 sc.

Round 15: ch1, *1 sc into next sc, from * repeat to the end of the round, sl st to ch1.

Round 16: ch1, *1 sc into each of the next 13 sc, 2 sc into next sc, from * repeat to the end of the round, sl st to ch1. =90 sc.

Round 17: ch1, *1 sc into next sc, from * repeat to the end of the round, sl st to ch1.

Round 18: ch1, *1 sc into each of the next 14 sc, 2 sc into next sc, from * repeat to the end of the round, sl st to ch1. =96 sc.

Round 19: ch1, *1 sc into next sc, from * repeat to the end of the round, sl st to ch1.

Round 20: ch1, *1 sc into each of the next 15 sc, 2 sc into next sc, from * repeat to the end of the round, sl st to ch1. =104 sc.

Round 21: ch1, *1 sc into next sc, from * repeat to the end of the round, sl st to ch1.

Round 22: ch1, *1 sc into each of the next 16 sc, 2 sc into next sc, from * repeat to the end of the round, sl st to ch1. =110 sc.

Try the hat on at this point, if it is too small, work more increase rounds.

Rounds 23-39: ch1, *1 sc into next sc, from * repeat to the end of the round, sl st to ch1.

Work rounds 36-39 in CC.


Brim

Round 40: ch1, *1 sc into front loop of next sc, from * repeat to the end of the round, sl st to ch1.

Round 41: ch 3, *V-st in next sc, skip 1 sc, from * repeat to the end of the round, sl st to ch-3. = 54 V-sts.

Round 42: ch 3, *V-st in ch-1-sp of next V-st, from * repeat to the end of the round, sl st to ch-3.

Round 43: as round 42.

Round 44: ch 3, *V-st2 in ch-1-sp of next V-st, from * repeat to the end of the round, sl st to ch-3.

Round 45: ch 3, *V-st2 in ch-2-sp of next V-st2, from * repeat to the end of the round, sl st to ch-3.

Round 46: ch 3, *V-st2 in ch-2-sp of next V-st2, ch 1, V-st2 in ch-2-sp of next V-st2, from * repeat to the end of the round, sl st to ch-3.

Round 47: as round 46.

Round 48: ch 3, *V-st2 in ch-2-sp of next V-st2, ch 1, from * repeat to the end of the round, sl st to ch-3.

Round 49: in CC, as round 48.

Bind off.


Finishing

Weave in ends. Steam iron the hat.

I think this hat is adorable. I have a small head so canit be made smaller?
Otherwise I would attach crocheted ties at the sides to help hold it on my head.

Yes, of course! Stoop BEFORE round 22, and "Try the hat on at this point, if it is too small, work more increase rounds." Make it to the size that fits your head. Then proceed to Rnd 23. Just that simple!
