Turning Leaves Brioche Shawl

Difficulty level: **** Experienced

Free Shawl Knitting Pattern

When I purchased a skein of Kauni (affiliate link) yarn in Fall colors, I knew immediately that I was going to knit a brioche shawl featuring a leaf motif. Kauni (affiliate link) yarn is a self-striping Shetland-like wool yarn with long (50-100 m) color changes. It is good for brioche, which tends to stretch when made from washable wool yarn or from other fibers. However, Shetland-like wool, being lofty and tightly spun, keeps the shape very well.

The shawl is knitted in the combination of 2-color brioche and 2-color garter stitch. It has an asymmetrical triangular shape. A brioche leaf border decorates the longest side of the shawl. The shawl is knitted from the pointy end with the increases done on the leaf side, just after the leaves themselves. The body of the shawl is knitted in 2-color garter stitch with 3-stitch brioche columns at 15-stitch garter st intervals.

Skills required:

To knit this shawl, you have to know how to knit 2-color garter stitch, 2-color brioche stitch, and make brioche decreases and increases.

Size: length 67” (168 cm), width 39” (98 cm)

Materials: Kauni (affiliate link) 8/2 Effektgarn 100% Wool fingering weight yarn 440 yd (400 m)/100g, color EV – 2 skeins (DC)
Kauni (affiliate link) Wool 8/2 Solids fingering weight yarn, 660 yards (604 meters) /150 gr, color Natural – 2 skeins (LC)
stitch markers

Needles: US 2 (2.75 mm) circular needles 24” (60 cm) or longer.

Gauge
18 sts x 44 rows = 4" x 4" (10cm x 10cm) In 2-color garter st:
18 sts x 24 rows = 4" x 4" (10cm x 10cm) In 2-color brioche st:
Note, that 1 row of brioche consists of 1 row of LC and 1 row of DC

Pattern Notes

Abbreviations

Please note that I use Nancy Marchant terminology for brioche stitch. I highly recommend her books Knitting Brioche: The Essential Guide to the Brioche Stitch and Knitting Fresh Brioche: Creating Two-Color Twists & Turns, as well as her lessons on craftsy.com.

yf - yarn forward: bring the yarn to the front, between the tips of the needles.
yb - yarn back: take the yarn to the back, between the tips of the needles.
sl1yof - slip 1, yarn over, yarn to front: with working yarn in front, slip the next stitch purlwise, then bring the yarn over the needle and the slipped stitch, then bring yarn back around to the front, ready to purl the following stitch.
yfsl1yo - yarn forward, slip 1, yarn over: bring the working yarn between the tips of the needles to front of work, slip the next stitch purlwise, then bring the yarn over the needle and the slipped stitch. Leave yarn in back, ready to knit the next stitch.
brk - brioche knit: knit the stitch together with its accompanying yarnover
brp - brioche purl: purl the stitch together with its accompanying yarnover
brkyobrk – [brk1, yo, brk1] in the same stitch. 2 stitches are increased.
br4st-inc – brk1, yo, brk1, yo, brk1 into the same stitch: 1 stitch increased to five.
brsssk (left slant 2-stitch decrease) –slip the next 2 sts (the marked st with its yarn over and the next single st) knitwise, one at a times, onto the right needle. Brk, then pass the 2 slipped sts over.
brk2tog (right slant 2-stitch decrease) –slip 2 sts knitwise (st with yarn over and single st) and brk them together. Return this st to the left needle and pass the st (with its yarn over) over. Slip this st purlwise to the right needle.
br4st-dec –brioche 4 st decrease (worked over 5 sts, 4 sts dec): slip first brioche st knitwise, slip brp st knitwise, place next brioche st on cable needle or stitch marker and hold in front of work, knit next st on LH needle, pass slipped brp st on RH needle over (1 st dec), move st to LH needle, pass next brioche st over (1 st dec), move st to RH needle, pass first slipped brioche st over (1 st dec), move st from marker to LH needle, move st on RH needle to LH needle and pass held brioche sts over (1 st dec), move st back to RH needle.
LS – light side
DS – dark side
LC – light color
DC- dark color
pm – place marker
sm – slip marker
k – knit
p – purl
sl1 – slip 1 (knitwise for the 1st stitch in a row).
k2tog – knit 2 together, 1 stitch decreased.
p2tog – purl 2 together, 1 stitch decreased.
p3tog – purl 3 together, 2 stitches decreased.
m 1 (Make 1 increase) - I used the increase described by Elizabeth Zimmerman: Make a backward loop over the right-hand needle.

Two-Color Brioche Stitch – Basic Instructions

These are included as a guide to the technique, and as instructions for swatching.

A single brioche row is worked in two passes, one in light color (LC) and the other in dark color (DC). Both colors are worked in one direction, then the work is turned and both colors are worked in the other direction. The light side (LS) of the project is first worked in light color (LC) yarn, then in dark color (DC) yarn. The LS of the work is where brk stitches are worked in light color (LC) yarn.

Odd number of stitches
Set-up row (LC): k1, *sl1yof, p1, rep from *, to last 2 sts, sl1yof, p1. Do not turn, slide work to the other end of the needle.
Set-up row (DC): sl1, yb, *brk1, yfsl1yo, repeat from * to last 2 sts, brk1, yb, sl last st. Turn.
Row 1 (LS, LC): k1, *yfsl1yo, brk1, repeat from * to last 2 sts, yfsl1yo, k1. Do not turn, slide work to the other end of the needle.
Row 1 (LS, DC): sl1, yf, *brp1, sl1yof, repeat from * to last 2 sts, brp1, yb, slip last st. Turn.
Row 2 (DS, LC): p1, *sl1yof, brp1, repeat from * to last 2 sts, sl1yof, p1. DO not turn, slide work to the other end of the needle.
Row 2 (DS, DC): sl1, yb, *brk1, yfsl1yo, repeat from * to last 2 sts, brk1, yf, sl last st. Turn.

Two-Color Garter Stitch

These are included as a guide to the technique, and as instructions for swatching.

Row 1 (LS LC): purl. Do not turn, slide work to the other end of the needle.
Row 1 (LS DC): knit. Turn.

Row 2 (DS LC): knit. Do not turn, slide work to the other end of the needle.
Row 2 (DS DC): purl. Turn.

Chain Selvedge

When working the selvedge stitches at the beginning and the end of the row, at the start of the LC rows, always bring LC under the DC.

Binding Off
I use the Invisible Ribbed Bind Off method described on p. 197 of the book “Cast On, Bind Off. 54 Step-by-Step Methods” by Leslie Ann Bestor, Storey Publishing 2012. This is a type of sewn bind-off and creates a flexible edge.

Elizabeth Zimmermann’s sewn bind off works well, too.

Leaf Edge Pattern

Consists of brioche leaf stitches and 2-color garter stitch to the left of the leaf.

To separate leaf edge stitches from the shawl’s body stitches, place a marker after the last leaf edge stitch.

Also note, that the number of stitches in the leaf changes from 1 to 17 and back to 1. To compensate for these changes there are garter sts, increased and decreased to the left of the leaf. On the right edge, the leaf border forms a scalloped edge. The increases are made on DS in DC after the stitch marker (after, because it is on the DS of the shawl) in rows 10, 12, 14, 16, 18 of the leaf. In row 33 in DC, the marker is moved 1 stitch to the right.

Note, that there are only 6 sts decreased (one side of the leaf is decreased by 8 sts). The reason for this is because the gauge for the garter st is slightly bigger that the gauge for the brioche leaf (plain brioche has the same gauge as the garter st). The decreases are made on DS in LC after the marker, by working k2tog in rows 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12.

There are 18 sts at the beginning of the leaf edge pattern: 1 selvedge and 17 brioche sts.

Shawl Body

Body of shawl is now established – the Leaf Edge will be worked at the start of RS/end of WS rows, and the end of RS rows will be increased, creating a pattern that alternates garter and brioche ribs. Increases for the body of the shawl are worked immediately after the Leaf Edge.

The stitch count for the following rows is for the stitches after the marker only. The Leaf Edge stitches are not counted.

Pattern Repeat

From here, you will place a new marker to separate off the new increases and the building garter and brioche section. The Leaf Edge pattern is established at the start of the RS/end of the WS rows, and the stitches after the new marker will be worked in garter and brioche stitch as established by the final rows of the previous section. Stitch counts are for the section immediately after the Leaf pattern, and before the newest marker.
