Seamless Brioche Girl Dress

Free Girl Dress Knitting Pattern

Size: 2 (4, 6)

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
Chest:  23 [25, 27] inches (58 [62, 68] cm)

Materials: Fingering weight yarn 100% wool, color blue green – 500 (600, 700) m (DC)
Fingering weight yarn 100% wool, color natural – 500 (600, 700) m (LC)
For this dress I used hand-dyed and un-dyed yarn. You can use any fingering (sock) weight yarn of 2 contrast colors.
3 plastic snaps

Needles: US 2 (2.75 mm) circular needles OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE
US 3 (3.25 mm) circular needles (used for cast on and for garter st bands)

Gauge:
24 sts/56 rows = 4" (10 cm) in garter stitch
20 sts/32 rows = 4" (10 cm) in brioche stitch
Note, that 1 row of brioche consists of 1 row of LC and 1 row of DC

k – knit
p  - purl
M1 (Make 1 increase) - I used the increase described by Elizabeth Zimmerman: Make a backward loop over the right-hand needle and in the next row knit (purl) it as a regular stitch.
sl – slip st
yo – yarn over
yf – yarn forward
yb – yarn back
sl1yof – slip 1, yarn over, yarn to front: with working yarn in front, slip the next stitch purlwise, then bring the yarn over the needle and the slipped stitch, then bring yarn back to the front, ready to purl the following stitch.
yfsl1yo - yarn forward, slip 1, yarn over: bring the working yarn under the needle to front of work, slip the next stitch purlwise, then bring the yarn over the needle and the slipped stitch. Leave yarn in back, ready to knit the next stitch.
brk – brioche knit: knit the stitch together with its yarn over
brp – brioche purl: purl the stitch together with its yarn over
brk4st Inc – brk1, yo, brk1, yo, brk1 into the same stitch: 1 stitch increased to five.
LS – light side
DS – dark side
LC – light color
DC- dark color
pm – place marker
mm – move marker

Round 1 – knit
Round 2 – purl
Repeat rounds 1-2

Two-Color Brioche Stitch in rounds

Please note that one brioche round consists of 2 rounds, one worked in DC and the other in LC.

Set up round (DC): *k1, yfsl1yo, repeat from * to the end of the round. Bring the LC yarn forward and leave it hanging in front of the work.
Set up round (LC):  yf, *sl1yof, brp1, repeat from * to the end of the round.  Bring the DC yarn back.
Round 1 (DC): yb, *brk1, yfsl1yo, repeat from * to the end of the round. Bring the LC yarn forward and leave it hanging in front of the work.
Round 1 (LC): yf, *sl1yof, brp1, repeat from * to the end of the round.  Bring the DC yarn back.
Repeat round 1 (DC and LC)

Dress

The dress is worked top-down back and forth and in rounds without seams. It features raglan-style sleeves. The yoke is knitted in garter stitch in rows with a back opening. The bodice and the skirt are knitted in two-color brioche st in rounds. The skirt and the short sleeves are finished with garter st bands.

Yoke

Yoke is worked in garter st with DC yarn.
With larger needles cast on 64 (66, 66) sts. Continue with smaller needles.
Set up row: k 13 (14, 14) (back), pm, k 1 (raglan st), k 7 (sleeve), pm, k 1 (raglan st), k 21 (22, 22) (front), pm, k 1 (rglan st), k 7, pm, k 1 (raglan st), k 13 (14, 14) (back).
Row 1 and all odd rows: knit, at raglan st make double increase on both sides of the raglan st as follows: knit to marker, m 1, mm, k 1, m 1. You’ll increase for 8 sts in every odd row.
Row 2 and all even rows: knit.
Work 32 (36, 40) rows of garter st.
Next row/round: knit, to last 3 sts, transfer the last 3 sts to a spare needle, overlap these 3 last sts and 3 beginning sts and knit them together to join into a round. Continue to work in rounds. Total sts now 190 (208, 224).
Begin working 2-color brioche st in rounds (see above). Work 4 brioche rounds (4 DC and 4 LC). In the next round work brk4st Inc at raglan sts. Work 2 more increase rounds in every 4th brioche round. Work total 16 (18, 18) brioche rounds.

Divide for sleeves.

Work back stitches and 1 raglan stitch, transfer sleeve stitches to a length of yarn, cast on 5 stitches, work 1 raglan stitch, all front stitches and 1 raglan stitch, transfer sleeve stitches to a length of yarn, cast on 5 stitches, work 1 raglan stitch and remaining back stitches. Continue to work bodice in rounds.
Work 44 (56, 68) brioche rounds.

Increase round (DC): Yb, brk1, yfsl1yo, [brk4st Inc, yfsl1yo, (brk1, yfsl1yo) 2 times] to last 2 sts, brk1, yfsl1yo.

Increase round (LC): Yf, sl1yof, brp1, [(sl1yo, p1, sl1yo, p1, sl1yo, brp1) into the increased sts, (sl1yof, brp1) 2 times] to end of round, end with sl1yof, brp1.

Work 44 (56, 68) brioche rounds.

With larger needles, work 6 rounds of garter stitch. Bind off.

Sleeves

Transfer sleeve stitches to larger circular needles, pick up 5 st over 5 underarm stitches. Work 6 rounds of garter stitch. Bind off.

Finishing

Sew on 3 snaps.
