American Girl Doll Carolina Summer Dress

Free Doll Dress Knitting Pattern

Materials: Plymouth Yarn Sockotta (45% cotton, 40% wool, 15% Nylon) fingering weight yarn, 3 1/2 oz/300 gr 414 yds/379 m - 1/2 ball (Main Color - MC)
Small amount, about 20 yrds of Knit Picks Stroll Fingering weight yarn, 50 gr/ 231 yrd /211 m (75% wool, 25% Nylon), color Barn Red (Contrasting Color - CC)
4 red buttons 5-6 mm
Stitch markers

Needles:   US 1 (2.25) circular needles OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE

Gauge for stockinette stitch: 28 st x 40 rows = 4" x 4"(10 cm x 10 cm)

kfr&b - knit front and back (increase 1)
m1 - Make 1 increase - I used the increase described by Elizabeth Zimmerman
Make a backward loop over the right-hand needle and in the next row/round purl/knit
as a regular stitch.

Pattern Notes:

Stockinette Stitch in rows:
1st row and all odd rows - knit sts
2nd row and all even rows - purl sts

Stockinette Stitch in rounds:
knit all rounds

Garter Stitch in rows:
knit all rows

Garter stitch in rounds:
1st round and all odd rounds - knit sts
2nd round and all even rounds - purl sts

Selvedge stitches: the first st knit, the last st purl.


The dress is worked from the top down, with increases at the raglan lines, back and forth with a back seam down to the waist line. From the waist line, it's worked in rounds without seams on circular needles. The button band is crocheted.

With CC yarn, cast on 46 sts, purl one row (foundation row).
Change to MC yarn, knit row 1 and purl row 2.
Divide the stitches as follows:
1 selvedge st, 5 st (right back), 1 st (raglan line, place marker), 10 sts (right sleeve), 1 st (raglan line, place marker), 10 sts (front), 1 st (raglan line, place marker), 10 sts (left sleeve), 1 st (raglan line, place marker), 5 sts (left back), 1 selvedge st. = 46 sts
Work in stockinette (all even rows knit, all odd rows purl). Work 20 rows increasing for 8 sts (double increase at each raglan st) in every odd row as follows: M1, k1, M1 at the raglan st. In row 22 you'll have 126 sts.
Change to CC yarn: knit row 23.
Row 24: purl 17 sts of the back, bind off the next 30 sts of the sleeve, purl 32 sts of the front,
bind off the next 30 sts of the sleeve, purl 17 sts of the back.
Row 25: knit sts of the back, cast on 6 sts for the underarm, knit sts of the front, cast on 6 sts for the underarm, knit sts of the back.
Row 26: purl.
Change to MC.
Row 27:  kfr&b in each st of the row except selvedge sts (double the amount of sts).
Work 11 more rows of stockinette st. When working row 39, join to the beginning of the row and continue to work in rounds.
Work 45 rounds in stockinette (all rounds knit).
Change to CC and work 5 more rounds in garter stitch: rounds 46, 48, 50 - knit, rounds 47 and 49 purl.
Bind off. Cut the yarn.


Crochet the button band on the right back: *3 sc, 3 ch, rep to the end of the row.
Sew 4 buttons on the left edge of the back.
