Small Sideways Shawl with Corkscrew Fringe

Free Shawl Crochet Pattern

This is a fairly simple pattern. You start from 2 sts and make 1 increase along 1 edge every odd row. At the end of this row you also make a corkscrew fringe. I find that the shawl looks best with a self-striping yarn, which gives it an interesting look. You can use any self-striping yarn. The longer the color changes, the wider the color stripes.

Size: width - 64" (160 cm), depth - 17" (42 cm)

Materials: Worsted weight yarn (100% wool)  262 yards (240 meters) / 100g  - 3 skeins.

Hook: G (4.0 mm)

Gauge for dc 15 st x 8 rows = 4" x 4" (10 x 10 cm), however the gauge is not important for this project


Abbreviations:

ch = chain
st(s) = stitch(es)
sl st = slip stitch
sc = single crochet
dc = double crochet


Corkscrew Fringe

Ch 18.
Dc into the 3rd chain from the hook, 2 dc into the same ch. 3 dc into the the next ch. Continue to work 3 dc into each chain. Tie off and secure the end after the last 3 dc into the first ch of the tape.

 


Shawl

Ch 4.

Row 1: 2 dc into the 1st ch (4th from the hook), *ch 18, dc into the 3rd chain from the hook, 2 dc into the same ch. 3 dc into the the next ch. Continue to work 3 dc into each chain. (from * is the instructions for the corkscrew fringe)

Row 2: 1 dc into every dc of the previous row.

Row 3: ch 3, 1 dc into every dc of the previous row, 2 dc in to the last dc, *ch 18, dc into the 3rd chain from the hook, 2 dc into the same ch. 3 dc into the the next ch. Continue to work 3 dc into each chain.

Repeat rows 2-3 30 times or to desired length (this will be 1/2 of the shawl)

Row 61: ch 3, 1 dc into every dc of the row to the last 2 sts, work a dc decrease into the last 2 sts, *ch 18, dc into the 3rd chain from the hook, 2 dc into the same ch. 3 dc into the the next ch. Continue to work 3 dc into each chain.

Row 62: 1 dc into every dc of the row.

Repeat rows 61-62 until 2 sts remains. Tie off.

Finishing

Block the shawl.
