American Girl Doll Seamless Raglan Top

Free Doll Top Knitting Pattern

Skills Required/Techniques Used:

-Knit & purl, cast on & bind off

-Increasing: make 1 (m1)

-Working in the round on double pointed needles

-Picking up stitches

-Basic chrocheting

Materials: Bernat Baby Sport weight acrylic yarn, 1256 yards (1148 meters) / 350 gr, color white - 1 ball (you'll need approx. 150-200 yds)


Needles: US 2 (2.75 mm) circular needles and US 2 (2.75 mm) dpn needles OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE

Gauge for stockinette stitch: 24 st = 4" (10 cm)

Notions: yarn needle, hook E (3,5 mm), 2 pieces of waste yarn, 6 small buttons (10 mm diameter), sewing needle and thread to attach buttons

Abbreviations:

dpn – double pointed needles

K – knit

P – purl

St – stitch

Sts - stitches

pu&k - pick up and knit

as est. - as established, work as the pattern demands, here knit the RS rows and purl the WS rows.

co – cast on

RS – right side

WS – wrong side

m 1 - make 1 increase - I used the increase described by Elizabeth Zimmerman: make a backward loop over the right-hand needle and in the next row/round purl/knit it as a regular stitch.

bb – button band

pm - place marker

sm - slip marker

sc - single crochet

ch - chain

Pattern Notes

Stockinette Stitch in rows:
Row 1 (RS) and all RS rows: knit
Row 2 (WS) and WS rows: purl

Repeat 2 rows

1 x 1 Rib in rows: multiple of 2 + 1:
Row 1 (RS) and all RS rows: *k 1, p 1 - repeat from * to last st, k1
Row 2 (WS) and all WS rows: *p 1, k 1 - repeat from * to last st, p1.

Rib 1x1 in rounds: multiple of 2:
All rounds - *k 1, p 1 - repeat from * across

The selvedge/edge stitches are worked as follows: knit the first stitch and purl the last one in row.

Raglan increases: Increase for raglan by making 1 st (m1) on each side of indicated, marked, stitch in every right side (RS) row: m1, sm (slip marker), k1 (raglan st), m1.

Sweater

The sweater is worked from the top to the bottom, back and forth with a back fastening.

Cast on 43 sts and purl one foundation row. Work in stockinette 4 rows (knit rows 1 and 3, purl rows 2 and 4) to make a collar.
Row 1 (RS): k42, p1

Row 2 (WS): k1, p42

Repeat 2 rows one more time.
Check the stitches and place markers:
1 edge st, 5 sts(right back), 1 st (the first raglan line, place a marker before this st), 9 sts (right sleeve), 1 st (the second raglan line, place the second marker before this st), 9 sts (front), 1 st (the third raglan line, place the third marker before this st), 9 sts (left sleeve), 1 st ( the forth raglan line, place the forth marker before this st), 5 sts (left back), 1 edge st. = 43 sts

Row 5 (RS and all RS rows, increase rows): k1, *work 1x1 rib till marker, m1, sm, k1, m1 - repeat from * 4 times, work 1x1 rib till last st, p1. In every RS row the number of sts increases by 8.

Row 6 (WS and all WS rows): k1, *work 1 x 1 rib till raglan line, p1 (raglan sts), repeat from * 4 times, work 1x1 rib till last st, p1.

Repeat rows 5-6 ten more times.

Row 5: =51 sts

Row 7: =59 sts

Row 9: =67 sts

Row 11: =75 sts

Row 13: =83 sts

Row 15: =91 sts

Row 17: =99 sts

Row 19: =107 sts

Row 21: =115 sts

Row 23: =123 sts

Row 25: =131 sts

Divide for sleeves and bodice:
Row 27 (RS): k1, 1x1 rib on the next 18 sts, transfer the next 31 sts to a piece of waste yarn, cast on 3 sts, 1x1 rib on the next 33 sts, transfer the next 31 sts to a piece of waste yarn, cast on 3 sts, 1x1 rib on the next 17 sts, p1. =75 sts

Row 28 (WS): k1, 1x1 rib on the next 73 sts, p1.

Repeat row 28 sixteen more times or to desired length. Bind off.

Sleeves

Sleeves are worked in 1x1 rib in rounds on dpn.

Transfer 31 sts of the sleeve to dpn, evenly distributing the sts; pu&k 3 sts over underarm sts. = 34 sts
Place a marker before the second underarm st to mark the beg of the round.
Work in 1x1 rib 4 rounds (or to desired length) and bind off.

Button Band:

Crochet the button band on the right back: *1 sc in each of the next 3 edge sts, 3 ch, skip 3 edge sts, repeat from * to the hem.

Finishing

Weave in all yarn ends.

Sew 6 buttons to the left edge of the back.
