Free Cowl Knitting Pattern

Finished size: 15" (38 cm) wide (when folded in half, flat), and 8" (20 cm) high.

MATERIALS
Noro Kureyon worsted weight yarn [100% wool; 110 yd/101 m per 50g skein] color: 250; 2 skeins (A)
Elann.com Peruvian Highland Wool worsted weight yarn [100% Wool; 109 yd /100 m per 50g skein]; color: Black; 1 skein (B)

Needles
1 set of US #6/4.0 mm straight needles

GAUGE
16 sts/24 rows = 4"x 4" (10 cm x 10 cm) in stockinette stitch

PATTERN NOTE

Wrap and turn in the short rows:
With yarn in front sl 1 stitch to the right needle
Move yarn between the needles to the back
Slip the stitch back to the left needle
Turn the work and bring yarn back to the wrong side between the needles


Directions

The cowl is worked sideways and the stripes are shaped with short rows.

Cast on 30 st using provisional cast on method.

Row 5: purl
Row 6: knit
Row 7: p 24, wrap, turn.
Row 8: knit
Row 9: p 18, wrap, turn.
Row 10 knit
Row 11: p 12, wrap, turn.
Row 12: knit
Row 13: p 6, wrap, turn.
Row 14: knit
Row 15: purl all sts
Row 16: knit
Row 17: p 12, wrap, turn.
Row 18: knit
Row 19: p 18, wrap, turn.
Row 20: knit
Row 21: p 24, wrap, turn.
Row 22: knit
Row 23: purl to the end of the row.
Row 24: knit
Row 25: purl

Black yarn
Rows 26-27: knit
Row 28: purl
Row 29: knit
Row 30: purl
Row 31: knit

Noro yarn
Row 32: knit
Row 33: purl
Row 34: k 24, wrap, turn.
Row 35: purl
Row 36: k 18, wrap, turn.
Row 37: purl
Row 38: k 12, wrap, turn.
Row 39: purl

Row 43: purl
Row 44: k 12, wrap, turn.

Black yarn
Rows 52-57: repeat rows 26-31

Repeat rows 4-57 4 more times. End the last repeat at row 54.


Finishing

 

Remove the waste yarn from the cast on and join the ends of the cowl with the Kitchener stitch.
With the black yarn pick up stitches along the edge of the cowl and work 4 rows of garter stitch. Bind off.
Repeat for other side.
