Free Shawl Knitting Pattern

The shawl is knitted from the bottom up, with short row shaping. The black stripes are worked with stockinette stitch and the colored stripes are worked with reverse stockinette stitch.

Materials: Kauni Wool 8/2 Effektgarn sport weight yarn, 660 yards (604 meters) /150 gr, color Rainbow - 0.7 skein (B)
Kauni Wool 8/2 Solids sport weight yarn, 660 yards (604 meters) /150 gr, color black - 0.7 skein (A)

Needles: US size 4 (3.5 mm)

Gauge: 20 sts = 4" (10 cm)

Horizontal Welt pattern

Black yarn (A)
Row 1: knit
Row 2: purl
Row 3: knit
Row 4: purl
Color yarn (B)
Row 5: knit
Row 6: knit
Row 7: purl
Row 8: knit
Repeat rows 1-8

Selvedge stitches
The 1st and last stitch of the pattern are selvedge stitches. To make the edges of your work even and smooth 2 more stitches (selvedge stitches) are added. You should always slip the first stitch as if to knit and purl the last stitch. The selvedge stitches are not counted in the pattern unless otherwise specified.

Wrap and turn in the short rows:
Work to designated st
With yarn in front slip next stitch to the right needle.
Move yarn between the needles to the back.
Slip the stitch back to the left needle.
Turn the work and bring yarn to the back between the needles.


Directions:

With black yarn (A) cast on 582 sts. Work 11 rows of garter stitch: all rows knit. While working 1st row place 2 markers, one at the 142nd st and the second at the 441st stitch.
Row 12 (right side): knit
Row 13 (wrong side): purl.
Starting from row 14, begin the short row shaping of the shawl.
Row 14: with color yarn (B): knit to within 3 st of the end of the row (or gap created by turn in previous row), wrap, turn
Row 15: knit to within 3 st of the end of the row, wrap, turn.
Row 16: purl to within 2 st of the gap created by turn in previous row, wrap, turn.
Row 17: knit to within 2 st of the gap created by turn in previous row, wrap, turn.
Row 18: with black yarn (A) knit to the 1st marker, *k4, k2tog, repeat 50 times from *, knit to within 2 st of the gap created by turn in previous row, wrap, turn.
Row 19: purl to within 2 st of the gap created by turn in previous row, wrap, turn.
Row 20: knit to within 2 st of the gap created by turn in previous row, wrap, turn.
Row 21: purl to within 2 st of the gap created by turn in previous row, wrap, turn.
Row 22: with color yarn (B) knit to within 2 st of the gap created by turn in previous row, wrap, turn.

Rows 46-61: repeat rows 22-29 2 times.
Rows 62-65: repeat rows 22-25

Row 67: purl to within 2 st of the gap created by turn in previous row, wrap, turn.
Row 68: knit to within 2 st of the gap created by turn in previous row, wrap, turn.

Rows 70-93: repeat rows 22-29 3 times.
Rows 94-97: repeat rows 22-25

Rows 142-149: repeat rows 22-29. Row 149 is the last short row. Cut both threads.
Row 150: with color yarn (B) knit from the 1st of the shawl, working all stitches on the needle.
Row 151: knit
Row 152: purl
Row 153: knit
Row 154: with black yarn (A), knit
Row 155: purl
Row 156: knit
Row 157: purl
Row 158: with color yarn (B) knit
Row 159: knit
Row 160: purl
Row 161: knit.
Bind off.

Finishing:
Block the shawl.
