Free Crochet Vest Pattern

Size:  M (L, XL, 2X, 3X)

The vest has slightly oversized fit.

Materials: 100% wool DK weight yarn, 142 yd (130 m) / 50 gr - 16 (16, 17, 18, 18) balls

Hook: H (5.0 mm) OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE

Gauge: 3" (7.60 cm) - 2 pattern repeat.

Scallop Shell Pattern:
Work chain multiple of 7 plus 5
Row 1: dc in the 5th ch from hook, *ch 2, skip next 6 ch, (dc, ch 3, dc) in next ch*, repeat from * to * to the last 7 ch, ch 2, skip next 6 ch, (dc, ch 1, dc) in the last ch, turn.
Row 2: ch 3 (counts as dc), 4 dc in next ch-1 space, skip next ch-2 space, *(4 dc, ch 1, 4 dc) in next ch-3 loop, skip next ch-2 space*, repeat from * to *  to the last ch-1 space, 4 dc in ch-1 space of turning ch, dc in 3rd ch of turning ch, turn.
Row 3: ch 4 (counts as dc, ch 1), dc in 1st dc, ch 2, skip next 8 dc, *(dc, ch 3, dc) in ch-1 space, ch 2, skip next 8 dc*, repeat from * to * to the turning ch, (dc, ch 1, dc) in 3rd ch of turning ch, turn.
Repeat rows 2-3.



Directions:
Vest is worked as one piece without seams top down. You start from the top of the back, work to the armholes, then the left and right of the front are worked from the top of the back to the armholes. From the armholes the vest is worked as one piece down to the desired length.

Start from the left shoulder.
Chain 33 (33, 40, 40, 47). Work rows 1-2 of the pattern. At the end of the row work ch 28. Set aside.

Right Shoulder
Chain 33 (33, 40, 40, 47). Work rows 1-2 of the pattern.
Join the end of the ch 28 to the beginning of the 2nd row of the right shoulder with slip st. Continue to work back with 12 (12, 14, 14, 16) pattern repeats. Work 24 (24, 24, 26, 28) rows (12 (12, 12, 13, 14) shell pattern repeats). At the end of the row 24 (24, 24, 26, 28) work ch 21 (28, 28, 35, 35). Set aside.

Left front
Start row 1 of the pattern on the foundation chain of the left shoulder, 4 (4, 5, 5, 6) pattern repeats. Work 18 (18, 18, 20, 22) rows (9 (9, 9, 10, 11) shell pattern repeats).
To shape the neckline
Row 19 (19, 19, 21, 23) (row 3 of the pattern): ch 4 (counts as dc, ch 1), dc in 1st dc, ch 2, skip next 8 dc, *(dc, ch 3, dc) in ch-1 space, ch 2, skip next 8 dc*, repeat from * to * to the turning ch, (dc, ch 3, dc) in 3rd ch of turning ch, turn.
Row 20 (20, 20, 22, 24) (row 2 of the pattern): ch 3 (counts as dc), (3 dc, ch 1, 4 dc) in next ch-1 space, skip next ch-2 space, *(4 dc, ch 1, 4 dc) in next ch-3 loop, skip next ch-2 space*, repeat from * to *  to the last ch-1 space, 4 dc in ch-1 space of turning ch, dc in 3rd ch of turning ch, turn.
Row 21 (21, 21, 23, 25) (row 3 of the pattern): work as described in the pattern, there will be 1 more pattern repeat.
Row 22 (22, 22, 24, 26) (row 2 of the pattern): work as described in the pattern.
Rows 23-26 (23-26, 23-26, 25-28, 27-30): work as rows 19-22 (19-22, 19-22, 21-24, 23-26), increasing for 1 more pattern repeat to shape the neckline. At the end of the row 26 (26, 26, 28, 30) work ch 28. Set aside.

Right Front
Start row 1 of the pattern on the foundation chain of the left shoulder, 4 (4, 5, 5, 6) pattern repeats. Work 18 (18, 18, 20, 22) rows (9 (9, 9, 10, 11) shell pattern repeats).
To shape the neckline
Row 19 (19, 19, 21, 23) (row 3 of the pattern): ch 6 (counts as dc, ch 3), dc in 1st dc, ch 2, skip next 8 dc, *(dc, ch 3, dc) in ch-1 space, ch 2, skip next 8 dc*, repeat from * to * to the turning ch, (dc, ch 1, dc) in 3rd ch of turning ch, turn.
Row 20 (20, 20, 22, 24) (row 2 of the pattern): ch 3 (counts as dc), 4 dc in next ch-1 space, skip next ch-2 space, *(4 dc, ch 1, 4 dc) in next ch-3 loop, skip next ch-2 space*, repeat from * to *  to the last ch-1 space, (4 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in ch-1 space of turning ch, dc in 3rd ch of turning ch, turn.
Row 21 (21, 21, 23, 25) (row 3 of the pattern): work as described in the pattern, there will be 1 more pattern repeat.
Row 22 (22, 22, 24, 26) (row 2 of the pattern): work as described in the pattern.
Rows 23-26 (23-26, 23-26, 25-28, 27-30): work as rows 19-22 (19-22, 19-22, 21-24, 23-26), increasing for 1 more pattern repeat to shape the neckline.

Join the end of the ch 28 of the back to the beginning of the last row of the right front with slip st.  Join the end of the ch 28 of the left front to the beginning of the last row of the back with slip st.
Continue to work the back and the fronts as one piece down. Work 30 rows (15 shell pattern repeats). Tie off.

Finishing
Work arm bands and neckline band with the button bands as follows:
Row 1: all dc
Row 2: (dc, ch 1) repeat to the end of the row.
Row 3: all dc.
Sew on 2 buttons.
