Shadow Knitting Hat

Free Hat Knitting Pattern

This pattern was inspired by the technique from the wonderful book Shadow Knitting by Vivian Hoxbro.

Head circumference: 20" (51 cm)

Materials:
Elann Peruvian Highland Wool worsted weight yarn, color Black, 50 g / 100 m (109 yards) - 1 skein. (A)
Elann Peruvian Highland Wool worsted weight yarn, color Light Grey Heather, 50 g / 100 m (109 yards) - 1 skein. (B)

Needles: circular 4 (3.5 mm) and 4 (3.5 mm) double-pointed OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE

Gauge: 16 st x 30 rows = 4" x 4" (10 x 10 cm)

Directions
Hat is worked in rounds.
With yarn A cast on 78 sts on circular needles, join and continue to work in rounds. Mark the 1st stitch.
Continue to knit in the round rib 1 k, 1 p for 6 rounds.
Round 7: all knit
Round 8: (k13, p13) repeat 3 times.
Round 9: with yarn B all knit
Round 10: (p13, k13 ) repeat 3 times.
Round 11: with yarn A all knit.
Round 12: (k13, p13) repeat 3 times.
Round 13: with yarn B all knit
Round 14: (p13 , k13) repeat 3 times.
Round 15: with yarn A all knit.
Round 16: (k13, p13) repeat 3 times.
Round 17: with yarn B all knit
Round 18: (p13, k13) repeat 3 times.
Round 19: with yarn A all knit.
Round 20: (k13 , p13) repeat 3 times.
Round 21: with yarn B all knit
Round 22: (p13, k13) repeat 3 times.
Round 23: with yarn A all knit.
Round 24: (k13, p13) repeat 3 times.
Round 25: with yarn B all knit

Round 28: (12 k, 12 p) repeat 3 times.
Round 29: with yarn B  *10 k, k2tog repeat from * 6 times.
Round 30: (p11, k11) repeat 3 times.
Round 31: with yarn A  *k9 k, k2tog repeat from* 6 times.
Round 32: (k10, p10) repeat 3 times.
Round 33: with yarn B  *k8, k2tog repeat  from * 6 times.
Round 34: (p9, k9 ) repeat 3 times.
Round 35: with yarn A knit.
Round 36: (k9 , p9) repeat 3 times.
Round 37: with yarn B  *k7, k2tog repeat from * 6 times
Round 38: (p8, k8) repeat 3 times.
Change to dp needles
Round 39: with yarn A  *k6 k, k2tog repeat  from* 6 times.
Round 40: (k7, p7) repeat 3 times.
Round 41: with yarn B  *5 k, k2tog repeat  from* 6 times.
Round 42: (6 p, 6 k) repeat 3 times.
Round 43: with yarn A *k4 k, k2tog repeat  from* 6 times.
Round 44: (5 k, 5 p) repeat 3 times.
Round 45: *k3, k2tog  repeat from* 6 times.
Round 46: *k2 , k2tog repeat from* 6 times
Round 47: *k1, k2tog repeat from* 6 times.
Round 48: Cut yarn, leaving a 10" (25 cm) tail. Pull through remaining sts and secure.
