American Girl Doll Classic Suit (Sweater and Skirt)

Difficulty level: ** Easy

Free Doll Suit Knitting Pattern

This outfit consists of a pullover and skirt. I was going for a retro vibe. Something that might look at home on a 1950s school girl.

The pullover is knitted in parts, which are then sewn together. It features contrast knitting at the neck, hem and sleeves, which adds a charming splash of color to this outfit.

The skirt features rib knitting, which is meant to mimic the pleated A-line skirts of the 1950s.

Feel free to experiment with different color choices. This pattern is very good for that!

Skills Required/Techniques Used:

-Knit & purl, cast on & bind off

-Increasing

-Working in the round on double pointed needles

-Working with yarn needle to assemble the sweater

  • Bernat (affiliate link) Satin 100% acrylic yarn worsted weight, color - Forest Mist, 149 m (163 yds)/100 g - 1 skein.
  • Bernat (affiliate link) Satin 100% acrylic yarn worsted weight, color - Silk, 149 m (163 yds)/100 g - 1 skein. You can use any white yarn of the same weight as you'll need only a small amount of it.

Wondering why you are using 3.5 mm needles for worsted weight yarn when it is usually 4.5. I love this design and will be making it for my granddaughter's dolls. Will definitely check the gauge.

Did you have a problem with the skirt? When I increased on line 6 (every K stitch) I wound up increasing 26 stitches and not 25. Please respond

I'm not the designer but here's my thoughts about the 3.5mm size needles. This size gives the holiday outfit a heavy winter sweater look. It looks like a bulky sweater would look like on a child/teenager. It also is stiffer and is a big part of giving the skirt it's flare.

I would suggest using sport weight yarn with the 3.5 needle as this looks really heavy and too tight

I felt there was something lacking in the skirt pattern. My did not look anything like your picture. Also, is there supposed to be some kind of closure on the skirt or does it just slide on and off?

I felt the directions should have been more detailed and specific, ie: how to put the sweater together, seam wise, and Row 18 of the skirt...???
