Free Hat Knitting Pattern

Skills Required/Techniques Used:

-Knit & purl, cast on & bind off

-Decreasing: knit 2 together (k2tog)

Materials: Regia Sock yarn 209 m (229 yds)/50g - 1 ball.

Notions: yarn needle, pom-pom maker
Needles: US#1 (2.00 mm) OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE.

Gauge: 24 st = 4" (10 cm)

Abbreviations:

K – knit

P – purl

St, sts – stitch, stitches

k2tog - knit 2 sts together

co – cast on

RS – right side

WS – wrong side

Pattern Notes:

Garter Stitch: all rows knit

Selvedge/edge stitches: The 1st and last stitches of the pattern are selvedge stitches. Here the edge sts are worked as follows: slip the first st knitwise and purl the last one.

Hat:

The hat is worked back and forth on straight needles with back seam.

Cast on 72 sts

Row1 (RS): sl 1, k70, p1. Repeat row 1 15 more times. Even rows are WS.

Row 17 (RS, decrease row): sl 1, k5, (k2tog, k5) 9 times, k2tog, p1. (=62 sts)

Rows 18-20: sl1, k60, p1.

Row 21 (RS, decrease row): sl1, k4, (k2tog, k4) x 9 times, k2tog, p1. (=52 sts)

Rows 22 -24: sl1, k50, p1.

Row 25 (RS, decrease row): sl1, k3, (k2tog, k3) x 9 times, k2tog, p1. (=42 sts)

Rows 26-28: sl1, k40, p1.

Row 29 (RS, decrease row): sl1, k2, (k2tog, k2) x 9 times, k2tog, p1. (=32 sts)

Rows 30-32 (WS): sl1, k30, p1.

Row 33 (RS, decrease row): sl1, k1, (k2tog, k1) x 9 times, k2tog, p1. (=22 sts)

Rows 34-36: sl1, k20, p1.

Cut yarn, leaving a 10" (25 cm) tail. Pull through remaining sts and secure.

Finishing:
Join back seam. Weave in all yarn ends.
Make a pompon and sew it on at the top of the hat.
