Two-Color Hat with Cable

Free Hat Knitting Pattern

Materials: 100% Wool Lion Brand (affiliate link) Fishermen's Wool yarn 465 yd (4258 m) / 227g - 1 skein. Color Natural (A)
100% Wool Lion Brand (affiliate link)� Fishermen's Wool yarn 465 yd (4258 m) / 227g - 1 skein. Color Brown (B)
Needles: 8 (5.0 mm) OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE.

Gauge for stocking stitch: 16 st x 18 rows = 4" x 4" (10 x 10 cm)

Patterns:

Stocking Stitch
1 row and all odd rows - knit sts
2 row and all even rows - purl sts

Reverse stocking stitch:
Row 1. purl
Row 2. knit
Repeat row 1 and 2.

2-Color Cable on 8 sts:
Rows 1, 3 and 5: Yarn A 4 k, yarn B 4 k.
Rows: 2, 4 and 6: yarn B 4 p, yarn A 4 p.
Row 7: C8B (Cable 8 Back).
Row 8: yarn A 4 p, yarn B 4 p.
Rows 9, 11 and 13: Yarn B 4 k, yarn A 4 k.
Rows: 10, 12 and 14: yarn A 4 p, yarn B 4 p.
Row 15: C8B (Cable 6 Back).
Row 16: yarn B 4 p, yarn A 4 p.
Repeat rows 1-16.

Directions
with yarn B cast on 36 sts (including edge stitches).
Knit as follows: with yarn A 1 edge st, p 7 (reverse stocking stitch), k 1, p 5, k 4, change to yarn B: k 4 (2-color cable on 8 sts), p 5, k 1, k 7, edge st. Knit for 20" (50 cm) or to fit your head circumference. Cast off.
With brown yarn pick up 102 sts along the white side of the main part of the hat starting 2.5 cm (1") from the edge to let the edge curl (see picture below).
Row 1: *k4, p 16*, repeat 5 times.
Row 2: *p 4, k2tog, k 12, k2tog*, repeat 5 times.
Row 3: *k 4, p2tog, p 10, p2tog*, repeat 5 times.
Row 4: *p 4, k2tog, k 8, k2tog*, repeat 5 times.
Row 5: *k 4, p2tog, p 6, p2tog*, repeat 5 times.
Row 6: *p 4, k2tog, k 4, k2tog*, repeat 5 times.
Row 7: *k 4, p2tog, p 2, p2tog*, repeat 5 times.
Row 8: *p 4, k2tog, k2tog*, repeat 5 times.
Row 9: *k 4, p 2*, repeat 5 times.
Row 10: *p 4, k2tog*, repeat 5 times.
Row 11: *k2tog, k2tog, p1*, repeat 5 times.
Row 12: *p2tog, k1*, repeat 5 times.
Cut yarn, leaving a 10" (25 cm) tail. Pull through remaining sts and secure.

Finishing:
Join the back seam.

Can you please tell me where the extra eight sts for the colour cable come from? I agree with the second comment, as I am in Toronto, Cda. I am knitting this for my daughter for Xmas, I would appreciate a quick response. Thank you

Dear Elaine, I have tried to understand this pattern. I want to knit it for my grandchildren. Could I please have it described in one line for each row of the 36 stitches, like the British patterns. I thank you for your time and effort.
