Free Hat Crochet Pattern

The hat is worked from the top down, in-the-round, without seams. The ruffle is crocheted separately and sewn to the hat.

FINISHED SIZE
Hat circumference: 20” (50 cm), unstretched; hat stretches to fit most adult heads
Height from edge of brim to top center of crown 8 1/2" (21 cm).

Materials: 100% Wool Brown Sheep Nature Spun Sport Weight yarn 184 yd (168 m)/50g, color 209 Wood Moss – 2 balls. (MC)
100% Wool Brown Sheep Nature Spun Sport Weight yarn 184 yd (168 m)/50g, color 750 Toffee Bar – 1 ball. (CC1)
100% Wool Brown Sheep Nature Spun Sport Weight yarn 184 yd (168 m)/50g, color N93 Latte – 1 ball. (CC2)

Hook: G (4.00 mm) OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE

Gauge in double crochet: 22 st x 12 rows = 4' (10 cm)

Abbreviations:
Dc, dc - double crochet
Sc, sc – single crochet
Ch, ch – chain
Sl st, sl st - slip stitch
dc/fp – front post stitch
dc/bp – back post stitch

Pattern Notes:

Post Crochet Rib:

Round 1: dc in each stitch across.

Round 2: 1 dc/fp (front post stitch), 1 dc/bp (back post stitch), repeat to the end of the round

Repeat round 2.


Hat

Chain 6, join into circle with slip stitch (sl st).

Round 1: ch3 (counts as 1 dc), 11 dc into the circle, join with sl st to the top of ch3. (12 dc)

Round 2: ch3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc into the same st, *2 dc in the next st, repeat to the end of the round, join with sl st. (24 dc)

Round 3: ch3 (counts as 1 dc), 2 dc in the next dc, *1 dc in the next dc, 2 dc in the next dc, repeat from * 10 more times, join with sl st. (36 dc)

Round 4: ch3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in the next dc, 2 dc in the next dc, *1 dc in each of the next 2 dc, 2 dc in the next dc, repeat from * 10 more times, join with sl st. (48 dc)

Round 5: ch3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in each of the next 2 dc, 2 dc in the next dc, *1 dc in each of the next 3 dc, 2 dc in the next dc, repeat from * 10 more times, join with sl st. (60 dc)

Round 6: ch3 (counts as 1 dc), work dc to the end of the round, join with sl st.

Round 7: ch3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in each of the next 3 dc, 2 dc in the next dc, *1 dc in each of the next 4 dc, 2 dc in the next dc, repeat from * 10 more times, join with sl st. (72 dc)

Round 8: ch3 (counts as 1 dc), work dc to the end of the round, join with sl st.

Round 9: ch3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in each of the next 4 dc, 2 dc in the next dc, *1 dc in each of the next 5 dc, 2 dc in the next dc, repeat from * 10 more times, join with sl st. (84 dc)

Round 10: ch3 (counts as 1 dc), work dc to the end of the round, join with sl st.

Round 11: ch3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in each of the next 5 dc, 2 dc in the next dc, *1 dc in each of the next 6 dc, 2 dc in the next dc, repeat from * 10 more times, join with sl st. (96 dc)

Rounds 12-13: ch3 (counts as 1 dc), work dc to the end of the round, join with sl st.

Round 14: ch3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in each of the next 6 dc, 2 dc in the next dc, *1 dc in each of the next 7 dc, 2 dc in the next dc, repeat from * 10 more times, join with sl st. (108 dc)

Rounds 15-25: ch3 (counts as 1 dc), work dc to the end of the round, join with sl st.

If you want deeper or shallower hat, change the number of rounds above.

Work the next three rounds with Post Crochet Rib:

Round 25: ch 2 (counts as 1 dc/bp), *1 dc/fp (front post stitch), 1 dc/bp (back post stitch), repeat from * to the end of the round, join with sl st.

Rounds 26-27: repeat round 25.


Ruffle

Chain 43.

Row 1 in MC: ch 1, 1 sc in the second chain from the hook, ch 6, * 1 sc in the next chain, ch 6, repeat from * to the end of the chain.

Row 2: *ch 8, 1 sc in the next ch-6-space, * ch 6, 1 sc in the next ch-6-space, repeat from * to the last ch-6-space.

Repeat row 2 seven more times.

Work rows 1-3 in MC.
Rows 4-6: CC1.
Rows: 7-9: CC2.

Finishing:

Weave in all yarn ends. Block the ruffle.

Sew on the ruffle on the side of the hat (see pictures).
