Black Shawl

Difficulty level: *** Intermediate

Free Crochet Pattern

Materials: Wool yarn fingering weight, 8 balls (50 g). Hook size C (3 mm) OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE

Gauge: Motif size = 5.5"/14 cm square.

Size: Width - 80" (200 cm), depth - 40" (100 cm) without fringe.

Abbreviations:

sc - single crochet
dc - double crochet
ch – chain
st – stitch, sts - stitches
tr - treble crochet
3 tr-cl - yo 2 times, insert hook in st, yo, pull through st, (yo, pull through 2 loops on hook) 2 times, *yo 2 times, insert hook in same st, yo, pull through st, (yo, pull through 2 loops on hook) 2 times; repeat from *, yo, pull through all 4 loops on hook, ch 1.
4 tr-cl - yo 2 times, insert hook in st, yo, pull through st, (yo, pull through 2 loops on hook) 2 times, *yo 2 times, insert hook in same st, yo, pull through st, (yo, pull through 2 loops on hook) 2 times; repeat from * 2 more times, yo, pull through all 5 loops on hook.

Directions: Square Motif (make 36):

Chain 7, join with a sl st to form a ring.

Rnd 1: 12 sc in the ring.

Rnd 2: Ch 7 (counts as 1 tr and ch 3), *1 tr in next sc of the previous rnd, ch 3. Rep from * 10 more times, sl st to ch-7.

Rnd 3: ch 4 (counts as 1 tr), 3 tr-cl in ch-7, *ch 5, 4 tr-cl in next ch-3, ch 7, 4 tr-cl in next ch-3, ch 5, 4 tr-cl in next ch-3. From * repeat 2 more times. Ch 5, 4 tr-cl in next ch-3, ch 7, 4 tr-cl in next ch-3, ch 5, sl st to ch-4.

Rnd 4: 2 sl st along the ch-5, *1 sc in the same ch-5 (next repeats 1 sc goes to the next ch-5), ch 2, (5 dc, ch 5, 5 dc) in ch-7, ch 2, 1 sc in next ch-5, ch 7. From * repeat 3 more times, sl st to 1st sc.

Rnd 5: 2 sl st (along ch-2), *ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in each of next 4 dc (in the next rep in each of next 5 dc), (3 dc, ch 5, 3 dc) in ch-5, 1 dc in each of next 5 dc, ch 5. From * repeat 3 more times, sl st to ch-3.

Rnd 6: *Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in each of next 7 dc (in the next repeat in each of next 8 dc), (3 dc, ch 5, 3 dc) in ch-5, 1 dc in each of next 8 dc, ch 3, 1 sc in next ch-5, ch 5, 1 sc in next ch-5, ch 3. From * rep 3 more times, sl st to ch-3.

Alternative Rnd 6 (to connect to another square on-the-go): *Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), sl st to the corresponding 1st dc, 1 dc in each of next 3 dc (in the next repeat in each of next 4 dc), sl st to corresponding dc, 1 dc in each of next 5 dc, (3 dc, ch 2, sl st to corresponding ch-5, ch 2, 3 dc) in ch-5, 1 dc in each of next 3 dc, sl st to corresponding dc, 1 dc in each of next 5 dc, sk st to the corresponding last dc, ch 3, 1 sc in next ch-5, ch 2, sl st to the correspomding ch-5, ch 2, 1 sc in next ch-5, ch 3. From * rep 3 more times, sl st to ch-3.

Triangle Motif (make 9):

Chain 8, join with a sl st to form a ring.

Row 1: 7 sc in the ring.

Row 2: ch 7, *1 tr in each sc of the 1st row, ch 3*. From * to * rep 4 more times. 1 tr.

Row 3: ch 8, * 4 tr-cl in ch 3, ch 5*. From * to * rep 5 more times (Make ch 7 between 3rd and 4th tr-cl). 1 tr.

Row 4: ch 3, 4 dc in ch 5, ch 2, 1 sc, ch 7, 1 sc, ch 2, 5 dc, ch 5, 5 dc, ch 2, 1 sc, ch 7, 7 sc, ch 2, 5 dc.

Row 5: ch 3, 7 dc, ch 5, 1 sc, ch 5, 8 dc, ch 5, 8 dc, ch 5, 1 sc, ch 5, 8 dc.

Row 6: ch 3, 10 dc, ch 3, 1 sc, ch 5, 1 sc, ch 3, 11 dc, ch 5, 11 dc, ch 3, 1 sc, ch 5, 1 sc, ch 3, 11 dc.

Finishing

Connect motives while crocheting the last row (see drawing 1). The triangles are half-squares and a to be connected at the same points.

After joining the motives, finish the shawl with 1 row of *1 dc, ch 1*.

On the longer side also crochet additional row of *1 sc, ch 2, 1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc in the same ch, ch 2.

Make fringe 5-5.5" (13-14 cm).

Is there a chart for the triangle motif? I find the written directions do not explain what space or stitch the following round's stitches should be go into.
