Free Crochet Scarf Pattern

Size:  Length - 44” (110 cm), Width - 5” (13 cm)

Materials: Red Heart (affiliate link) Super Saver 100% acrylic yarn worsted weight, color White, 333 m (364 yds)/198 g - 1 skein. (A)

Hook: US H/8 (5.0 mm)

Gauge: 15 sc x 20 rows = 4” x 4” (10 cm x 10 cm)

Abbreviations
Ch - chain
Sc - single crochet
Dc - double crochet
Sdc - spiked double crochet - the stitch is worked 2 rows below: yo, insert the hook from front to back under the sc 2 rows below, draw the yarn through and up to the current level of work, finish the dc as usual.

Pattern Notes:

The scarf features a fringe, which is created as every row is worked. The scarf is worked sideways, from the right side only, the work is never turned. Each row starts with the new strand of yarn (however each color is worked 2 rows).

Color Sequence
Chain and rows 1-2: yarn A
Rows 3-4: yarn B
Rows 5-6: yarn C
Rows 7-8: yarn D
Rows 9-10: yarn E
Rows 11-20: repeat rows 1-10
Rows 21-22: yarn A

Scarf

Make a slip knot on the hook, leaving a 4” (10 cm) end, chain 165 or as much as the desired length of the scarf. The scarf is worked sideways. Secure the end of chain and cut the yarn, leaving a 4” (10 cm) end.

Row 1: leave a 4” (10 cm) end of yarn, make a slip knot on the hook, remove hook, insert it in first ch, put slip knot back on hook and pull it through, ch 1, 1 sc in each ch across, finish off, leaving a 4” (10 cm) end.

Row 2: leave a 4” (10 cm) end of yarn, make a slip knot on hook, remove hook, insert it in first st of previous row, put slip knot back on hook and pull it through, ch 1, 1 sc in each sc across, finish off, leaving a 4” (10 cm) end.

Row 3: join yarn in first st as described in row 2, 1 sc in next sc, skip next sc, Sdc under sc 2 rows below, *1 sc in each of next five sc, skip next sc, Sdc under sc 2 rows below, from * repeat to the end of the row, end with 1 sc, cut off yarn, leaving 4” (10 cm) end.

The beginning and end of the rows is the same for each row as described in row 2.

Row 4: join yarn in first st, 1 sc in the next sc, 1 sc in the Sdc, skip 1 sc, Sdc under sc 2 rows below, *1 sc into each of next 4 sc, 1 sc in the Sdc, skip next sc, Sdc under sc 2 rows below, from * repeat to the end of the row, cut off yarn, leaving 4” (10 cm) end.

Rows 5-22: repeat row 4, but work one more sc at the beginning of each row before working Sdc. This moves all dc stitches over one st in each row, placing them on a diagonal.

Finishing
Block the scarf, trim the fringe.
