Reversible Brioche Poncho

Difficulty level: **** Experienced

Free Poncho Knitting Pattern

The Reversible Brioche Poncho is a great garment for the Fall. Brioche knit construction makes the body of the poncho think and soft, and the turtle-neck style collar helps keep your neck warm. The poncho is also completely reversible. You can use any 2 colors of yarn. A particularly interesting look is if you use a self-striping yarn in combination with a solid yarn.

Skills required:

To knit this poncho, you have to know how to knit 2-color brioche stitch, and make brioche increases.

Short Overview of the pattern

The poncho is knitted top-down, in rounds, one round in DC followed by one round in LC. The DC is the “right” side of the poncho. However, the poncho is effectively reversible.

Poncho

Using larger needles and DC loosely cast on 80 (88, 96) st, join and continue to work in rounds with smaller needles. Change to longer circular needles as needed. Place marker at the beginning of the row.

Setup Round (DC): ((K1, yf sl1yo) × 10 (11, 12) times, plm) 4 times. [80, (88, 96) sts]. Bring the DC yarn forward and leave it hanging in front of the work.
Setup Round (LC): ((Yf sl1yo, brp) × 10 (11, 12), slm) 4 times. Bring the LC yarn forward and leave it hanging in front of the work. Bring the DC yarn back.

Round 1 (DC): (Brkyobrk, (yf sl1yo, brk) × 8 (9, 10), yf sl1yo, brkyobrk, yf sl1yo, slm) 4 times. [96, (104, 112) sts]. Bring the DC yarn forward and leave it hanging in front of the work. Bring the LC yarn back.
Round 1 (LC): (Yf sl1yo, p1, (yf sl1yo, brp) × 9 (10, 11), yf sl1yo, p1, yf sl1yo, brp, slm) 4 times. Bring the LC yarn forward and leave it hanging in front of the work. Bring the DC yarn back.

Round 2 (DC): ((Brk, yf sl1yo) × 12 (13, 14), slm) 4 times. Bring the DC yarn forward and leave it hanging in front of the work. Bring the LC yarn back.
Round 2 (LC): ((Yf sl1yo, brp) × 12 (13, 14), slm) 4 times. Bring the LC yarn forward and leave it hanging in front of the work. Bring the DC yarn back.

Rounds 3 - 4: Repeat round 2 (DC and LC).

Round 5 (DC): (Brkyobrk, (yf sl1yo, brk) repeat to the 3 sts before the marker, yf sl1yo, brkyobrk, yf sl1yo, slm) 4 times. [112, (120, 128) sts]. Bring the DC yarn forward and leave it hanging in front of the work. Bring the LC yarn back.
Round 5 (LC): (Yf sl1yo, p1, (yf sl1yo, brp) repeat to the 4 sts before the marker, yf sl1yo, p1, yf sl1yo, brp, slm) 4 times. Bring the LC yarn forward and leave it hanging in front of the work. Bring the DC yarn back.

Round 6 (DC): ((Brk, yf sl1yo) repeat to the marker, slm) 4 times. Bring the DC yarn forward and leave it hanging in front of the work. Bring the LC yarn back.

I had a little difficulty with this pattern(not surprising). I looked it up on YouTube to watch someone do the brioche stitch and then tried it on a small sample. It looks really nice. I did not do increases with the LC. I think that row is just to work in the increased stitches from the previous row. I have about 6 inches done and it looks like the picture. I have made mistakes at the beginning and I see on the LC side that the dark colour is showing up. I'm not sure what I did there. I do like the pattern and it's not too hard once you get the pattern set. ( I have had to back track a little bit to fix a mistake. I hope to have it finished before Christmas. Couldn't find a 60 inch circular needle anywhere had to order from Amazon. Won't be here until the end of October into November. Maybe I won't get it done before Christmas. Oh well.

The pattern as written is confusing. Pattern states increase rounds are DC rounds. Bu then after instructions for DC round increase there are instructions for LC round increase.

Is the LC round increase only done once?

Can you please clarify?

Just read your comment as I intend to knit this.
The LC increase round works the increased stitches from the DC increase into the established brioche pattern, it’s not actually an increase on that row.
