Selvedge stitches
Knit at the beginning of the row, purl at the end of the row.

Make a backward loop over the right-hand needle and in the next row purl as a regular stitch. See picture here

Jacket

The jacket is worked from top to bottom, back and forth without seams in stockinette on #10 needles. Button bands, cuffs and the bottom band are worked in 1x1 rib on #8 needles. Collar is worked in stockinette on #8 needles.

Using circular #10 needles with yarn A, cast on 18 sts and purl one, foundation, row.
At the same time divide the stitches as follows:
1 edge st, 2 sts (right front), 1 st (raglan line, place marker), 2 sts (right sleeve), 1 st (raglan line, place marker), 4 sts (back), 1 st (raglan line, place marker), 2 sts (left sleeve), 1 st (raglan line, place marker), 2 sts (left front), 1 edge st.

Work stockinette st pattern: all odd rows knit, all even rows purl.
Work 12 rows increasing by 8 sts (double increase at the raglan sts) in each odd row as follows: M1, k1, M1 at the raglan st.

Row 13: k 10 (right front), transfer 11 sts of the right sleeve to a length of yarn,
k 16 (back), transfer 11 sts of the left sleeve to a length of yarn, k 9, p1 (left front)
Work back and forth from 14 to 22 rows of stockinette or to desired length.

Row 23: change to yarn B and work 1x1 rib for 6 rows. Bind off.

Sleeves

Transfer 11 sts of the sleeve to dpn and work 10 rounds of stockinette st,
change to yarn B and work 1x1 rib for 5 rounds. Bind off.

Finishing

Button band

Using #10 needles and yarn B pick up and knit 27 sts along the left front. Work 1x1 rib for 5 rows. Bind off.

Mark the position of the buttons. Pick up and knit 27 sts along the right front. Work 1x1 rib for 2 rows. In the next row make button holes (yo, k2tog) opposite the marked buttons.
Work rib for 2 more rows and bind off.

Collar

With yarn B and #8 needles, wrong side facing, pick up and knit 26 sts along the neckline. Work 6 rows  in stockinette st. Bind off and leave a 10-12" tail. Fold the collar in half and with the yarn's tail sew the bound-off edge to the base of the collar to make a mandarin collar.

Attach buttons to the button bad.

Pants

Pants are made from yarn B only.

Needles: dpn US #4 (3.5mm).

Gauge 18 sts = 4"(10 cm)

Cast on 50 sts, join and continue to work in rounds, place a marker at the beg. of the round. Work 1x1 rib for 5 rounds.
Round 6: k 25, m1 (place a marker), k 25, m1 (this is the marker which marks the beg of the round on this st).
Knit 34 rounds. In rounds 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32 increase by 1 st (M1) before and after the marked sts, thus increasing by 4 sts in each of those rounds.

Round 35: knit all sts from the beg of the round to the next marked st, but do not work it.
Transfer all the remaining sts, starting from the marked st, to a length of yarn.

Distribute the working sts on 4 dpn, cast on 3 sts and join and continue to work the pant leg in rounds. Knit 33 rounds.

Work 12 more rounds in garter st (one round knit, one round purl). Bind off.

Transfer the sts from the waste yarn to dpn, pick up and knit 3 sts, join and continue to work the pant leg in rounds the same way as the first leg.

Hat

Needles: dpn US #4 (3.5mm) and dpn #7 (4.5mm)

With dpn #4 and yarn B, cast on 50 sts, distribute on 4 dpn and join to form a circle. Mark the beg of the round.
Work 7 rounds in 1x1 rib.
Change to dpn #7 and yarn A. Knit 7 rounds.
The next round: *k3, k2tog, repeat from * 10 times across the round.
Knit the next round.
The next round: *k2, k2tog, repeat from * 10 times across the round.
Knit the next 3 rounds.
The next round: *k1, k2tog, repeat from * 10 times across the round.
Knit the next 2 rounds.
The next round: *k2tog, repeat from * 10 times across the round.
Knit the next 2 rounds.
Cut yarn, leaving a 10" (25 cm) tail. Pull through all the sts and secure.

Enjoy!

I am not sure about the gauge. It says 18 stitches = 4 ". I am used to it telling how many rows to knit as well as the number of stitches. Can you help me?
