Free Backpack Crochet Pattern

Hook: D (3.25 mm)

Gauge: 17 sts (1 pattern repeat) = 2" (5 cm).

Abbreviations:

ch = chain
st(s) = stitch(es)
sl st = slip stitch
sc = single crochet
Ldc (long double crochet) - work in front of previous 3 rounds, yo, insert hook in center sc of 3-sc-group on fourth row below, yo and pull up a loop even with loop on hook (3 loops on hook), (yo and draw through 2 loops on hook) twice. Skip sc behind Ldc just made.


Backpack

Backpack is crocheted from the bottom up in rounds, without seams. The straps are crocheted separately and attached to the backpack.

With color A
Chain 4, join with sl st to make ring.
Rnd 1: ch 1 (counts as sc), 11 sc into the ring, sl st to ch 1.

Increase by 6 sc in every round 10 times as follows:
Rnd 2: ch 1 (counts as sc), *2 sc into the next st, 1 sc in the following st, repeat from * 5 more times, sl st to ch 1.

Rnd 3: ch 1 (counts as sc), *2 sc into the next st, 2 sc in the following sts, repeat from * 5 more times, sl st to ch 1.

Rnd 4: ch 1 (counts as sc), *2 sc into the next st, 3 sc in the following sts, repeat from * 5 more times, sl st to ch 1.

Rnd 5: ch 1 (counts as sc), *2 sc into the next st, 4 sc in the following sts, repeat from * 5 more times, sl st to ch 1.

Rnd 6: ch 1 (counts as sc), *2 sc into the next st, 5 sc in the following sts, repeat from * 5 more times, sl st to ch 1.

Strap

With yarn D ch 10
Row 1 and all other rows: ch 2 (counts as 1 dc), 9 dc.
Work until 47" (118 cm) long (or to desired length).

Finishing

Work 1 row of sc along the handle connecting both sides to make a tube. Insert a cord into the tube and secure the ends (optional). Sew the middle of the strap at the beginning of the round at the top of the backpack. Sew the end along the bottom of the backpack.

Crochet a chain for the drawstring. Insert into the loops at the top of the backpack.
