Free Hat Crochet Pattern

The hat is worked top down, in rounds, without any seams. The brim is shaped with millinery wire.

Size: one

Head circumference 22" (56 cm)

Materials:
Aunt Lydia (affiliate link)'s 100% Mercerized Cotton, Size 3, 150yd/138m, color - Natural - 1.5 balls.
Millinery wire 16 gauge - 40" (100 cm).
Pliers

Hook: D (3.25 mm)

Gauge: 22 dc = 4" (10 cm)

Abbreviations:

ch = chain
st(s) = stitch(es)
sl st = slip stitch
sc = single crochet
dc = double crochet
FPdc = front post double crochet

Hat

Chain 12, join with sl st to make ring.
Rnd 1: ch 2 (counts as dc), 11 dc into the ring, sl st to ch 2.
Rnd 2: ch 2 (counts as dc), 23 dc, sl st to ch 2.
Rnd 3: ch 5 (counts as 1 dc and ch 3), *1 dc, skip 1 st, ch 3, repeat from * to the end of the
round, sl st to ch 5.
Rnd 4: ch 2 (counts as dc), *3 dc in ch 3, 1 dc in 1 dc, repeat from * to the end of the round, sl st to ch 2.
Rnd 5: ch 4 (counts as 1 dc and ch 2), *1 dc, skip 1 st, ch 2, repeat from * to the end of the round, sl st to ch 4.
Rnd 6: ch 2 (counts as dc), *2 dc in ch 2, 1 dc in 1 dc, repeat from * to the end of the round, sl st to ch 2.
Rnd 7: ch 4 (counts as 1 dc and ch 2), *1 dc, skip 1 st, ch 2, repeat from * to the end of the
round, sl st to ch 4.
Rnd 8: ch 2 (counts as dc), *2 dc in ch 2, 1 dc in 1 dc, repeat from * to the end of the round, sl st to ch 2.
Rnds 9-21: ch 2 (counts as dc), dc to the end of the round, sl st to ch 2.
Rnd 22: ch 4 (counts as 1 dc and ch 2), *1 FPdc, skip 1 st, ch 2, repeat from * to the end of the
round, sl st to ch 4.
Rnd 23: ch 2 (counts as dc), *2 dc in ch 2, 1 dc in 1 FPdc, 2 dc in ch 2, skip 1 FPdc, repeat from * to the end of the round, sl st to ch 2.
Rnd 24: ch 4 (counts as 1 dc and ch 2), *1 dc, skip 1 st, ch 2, repeat from * to the end of the round, sl st to ch 4.
Rnd 25: ch 2 (counts as dc), *2 dc in ch 2, 1 dc in 1 dc, 2 dc in ch 2, skip 1 dc, 2 dc in ch 2,
skip 1 FPdc, repeat from * to the end of the round, sl st to ch 2.
Rnd 26: ch 4 (counts as 1 dc and ch 2), *1 dc, skip 1 st, ch 2, repeat from * to the end of the
round, sl st to ch 4.
Rnd 27: ch 2 (counts as dc), *2 dc in ch 2, skip 1 dc, repeat from * to the end of the round, sl st
to ch 2.
Rnd 28: ch 4 (counts as 1 dc and ch 2), *1 dc, skip 1 st, ch 2, repeat from * to the end of the
round, sl st to ch 4.
Rnd 29: ch 2 (counts as dc), *2 dc in ch 2, skip 1 dc, repeat from * to the end of the round, sl st
to ch 2.
Rnd 30: ch 1 (counts as 1 sc), work sc to the end of the round crocheting around the millinery
wire.

While crocheting around the wire, stop when you get to the last 2 inches (5 cm), adjust the wire.
Then the secure the ends of the wire with the pliers, twisting and flattening the ends, and end
the round, working sc over the connection. Tie off.

The stripey hat was made of MC and four CC yarns. The color sequence is as follows:
Rnds 1-2 - CC1
Rnds 3-4 - CC2
Rnds 5-6 - CC3
Rnds 7-8 - CC4
Rnds 9-20 - MC
Rnds 21-23 - CC1
Rnds 24-25 - CC2
Rnds 26-27 - CC3
Rnds 28-30 - CC4

The wire bit is the round 30 (last round) presumably to stop brim being floppy.
