Three-Cable Scarf

Free Scarf Knitting Pattern

Skills Required/Techniques Used:
--Knit & purl, cast on & bind off
--Working 4-stitch and 6-stitch simple cables

Finished size: 8" x 51" (20 x 130 cm)

Materials:
Knitpicks Telemark sport weight yarn 100% wool 103 yards (94 m) / 50 gram color 2113 Skyline - 3 balls

Needles: size #6 (4 mm) needles
Cable needle

Gauge: 19 sts x 24 rows = 10 x 10 cm (4"x4") for stocking stitch

Notions:
- Cable needle
- Stitch markers (optional)

Abbreviations:
K – knit
P – purl
St, sts – stitch, stitches
as est. - as established, work as the pattern demands,
co – cast on
RS – right side
WS – wrong side
2/2 LC - left cross cable on 4 sts
3/3 LC - cable on 6 sts with left slant


Pattern Notes:

Stockinette in rows:
Row 1 (RS): knit
Row 2: purl
Repeat 2 rows.

Seed Stitch multiple of 2
Row 1 (RS): *k1, p1 repeat from * to end of row
Row 2: k the purl sts and p the knit sts.
Repeat 2 rows.

Left Cross Cable on 4 sts
Row 1 (RS): knit
Row 2: purl
Row 3: slip 2 sts purlwise from left needle to cable needle and hold in front of work; knit next 2 sts on left needle; return 2 sts from cable needle to left needle and then knit them
Row 4: purl
Repeat rows 1-4

Left Cross Cable on 6 sts
Rows 1, 3 (RS): knit
Row 2, 4, 6 (WS): purl
Row 5: slip 3 sts purlwise from left needle to cable needle and hold in front of work; knit next 3 sts on left needle; return 3 sts from cable needle to left needle and then knit them

Selvedge stitches: knit the first st and purl the last one.

Short Overview of the Pattern:

The scarf is worked in one piece with borders in seed stitch.

Directions:

Cast on 38 sts.

Row 1 (RS): *K1, p1 repeat from * 19 times. (38 sts)

Row 2 (WS): K2, *p1, k1 repeat from * 17 times, p2.

Repeat rows 1 - 2 two more times.

Row 7: (K1, p1) x 3 times, p3, k4, p3, k6, p3, k4, p3, (k1, p1) x 3 times.

Row 8: K1, (k1,p1) x 2 times, k4, p4, k3, p6, k3, p4, k3, (p1, k1) x 2, p2.

Row 9: (K1, p1) x 3 times, p3, 2/2 LC, p3, k6, p3, 2/2 LC, p3, (k1, p1) x 3 times.

Row 10: Repeat row 8.

Row 11: (K1, p1) x 3 times, p3, k4, p3, 3/3 LC, p3, k4, p3, (k1, p1) x 3 times.

Row 12: Repeat row 8.

Row 13: Repeat row 9.

Row 14: Repeat row 8.

Row 15: Repeat row 7.

Row 16: Repeat row 8.

Row 17: (K1, p1) x 3 times, p3, 2/2 LC, p3, 3/3 LC, p3, 2/2 LC, p3, (k1, p1) x 3 times.

Row 18: Repeat row 8.

Repeat rows 7-18 to desired length. When the desired length is achived work rows 1-2 three times. Bind off.


Finishing:

Weave in all yarn ends. Block the scarf.
