Summer Top with Applied I-Cord

Free Summer Top Knitting Pattern

Size: 12/14 (42/44)

Materials: 100% Sugar Cane Araucania Ruca DK Weight yarn 263 yd (240 m) / 100g - 4 skeins.
Needles: 3 (3.25 mm) and double pointed needles size 3 (3.25 mm) OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE.

Gauge: 20 st x 28 rows = 4" x 4" (10 x 10 cm)

Patterns:

Stocking Stitch
1 row and all odd rows - knit sts
2 row and all even rows - purl sts

Directions
The top is worked in the stocking stitch.

Back
Cast on 92 sts. Mark the 32th and 61st stitches. This is where decreases and increases for the shaping of the waist line tapering will be worked.
Rows 1-2: stocking stitch.
Rows 3-12: increase for 1 st at the beginning and at the end of each odd row 5 times for the rounded hemline.
Rows 7-28: To taper from the hips tp the waist decrease for 2 sts in each 4th row (rows 7, 11, 15, 19, 23, 27) 6 times. Also decrease for 1 sts at the beginning and at the end of the row in rows 19 and 27.
Rows 29-34: stocking stitch.
Rows 35- 90: to taper from the waist to the bust line increase for 2 sts in each 8th row 7 times. Also increase for 1 sts at the beginning and at the end of the row in rows 49 and 87.
Rows 91-98: stocking stitch
Row 99: to shape armholes cast off 6 sts at the beginning of the row
Row 100: cast off 6 sts at the beginning of the row
Row 101: cast off 2 sts at the beginning of the row
Row 102: cast off 2 sts at the beginning of the row
Row 103: cast off 1 st at the beginning of the row
Row 104: cast off 1 st at the beginning of the row
Row 105: cast off 1 st at the beginning of the row
Row 106: cast off 1 st at the beginning of the row
Rows 107-150: stocking stitch.
Row 151: to shape a neckline cast off 18 sts in the middle of the row and finish left and right sides of the back separately.

Left Shoulder
Row 152: stocking stitch
Row 153: cast off 2 sts at the beginning of the row
Row 155: cast off 1 st at the beginning of the row, to shape a shoulder line don't knit the last 7 sts, turn (short row).
Row 157: cast off 1 st at the beginning of the row, don't knit the last 14 sts, turn (short row).
Row 159: cast off 1 st at the beginning of the row, to shape a shoulder line don't knit the last 21 sts, turn (short row).
Row 161: knit all the stitches on the needle.
Row 162: purl
Cast off.

Right Shoulder
Row 152-153: stocking stitch
Row 154: cast off 2 sts at the beginning of the row
Row 156: cast off 1 st at the beginning of the row, to shape a shoulder line don't knit the last 7 sts, turn (short row).
Row 158: cast off 1 st at the beginning of the row, don't knit the last 14 sts, turn (short row).
Row 160: cast off 1 st at the beginning of the row, to shape a shoulder line don't knit the last 21 sts, turn (short row).
Row 162: purl all the stitches on the needle.
Cast off.

Front
Cast on 96 sts. Mark the 34th and 63st stitches. This is where decreases and increases for the shaping of the waist line tapering will be worked.
Rows 1-2: stocking stitch.
Rows 3-12: increase for 1 st at the beginning and at the end of each odd row 5 times for the rounded hemline.

Row 83: work 12 short rows to shape bust darts as follows:
*Knit across row until 6 stitches remain on left hand needle. Bring yarn to front of needle as though you are going to purl, slip stitch. Bring yarn to back of work. Turn work. (wrap)
Purl across row until 6 stitches remain on left hand needle. Bring yarn to back of needle, slip stitch. Bring yarn to front of work. Turn work. (wrap from the purl side)*
Repeat from * to * 4 more times, increasing the number of unworked stitches at each edge by 6 each row.
Second to last row: Starting where you are, knit all stitches to the end of the row. Turn.
Last row: Purl to the end of the row.
Rows 85-98: stocking stitch
Row 99: to shape armholes cast off 8 sts at the beginning of the row
Row 100: cast off 8 sts at the beginning of the row
Row 101: cast off 2 sts at the beginning of the row
Row 102: cast off 2 sts at the beginning of the row
Row 103: cast off 1 st at the beginning of the row
Row 104: cast off 1 st at the beginning of the row
Row 105: cast off 1 st at the beginning of the row
Row 106: cast off 1 st at the beginning of the row
Rows 107-120: stocking stitch.
Row 121: to shape a neckline cast off 12 sts in the middle of the row and finish left and right sides of the back separately.

Left Sleeve
work as a mirror image of the right sleeve.

Finishing:
Join shoulder seams.
Join side seams and sleeve seams.
Set in sleeves.

The neckline and the bottom of the top and the sleeves are finished with applied I-cord. Please see video instructions below.

Neckline

Work 30 cm (11") of 4-stitch applied cord on double-pointed needles.
Pick up stitches along the neckline and work applied I-cord around the neck line.
Work 30 cm (11") of 4-stitch applied cord on double-pointed needles. Cast off.

Pick up stitches along the rounded hemline of the front and work applied I-cord. Cast off.
Pick up stitches along the rounded hemline of the back and work applied I-cord. Cast off.

Pick up stitches along the bottom of the sleeves and work applied I-cord. Cast off.

After completing the i-cord you dont mention how to finish of the hemlines. Do you just stitch cord closed?
