Free Hat Knitting Pattern

This pattern was inspired by the technique from the wonderful book Shadow Knitting by Vivian Hoxbro.

Head circumference: 20" (51 cm)

Materials:
Elann Peruvian Highland Wool worsted weight yarn, color Black, 50 g / 100 m (109 yards) - 1 skein. (A)
Elann Peruvian Highland Wool worsted weight yarn, color Light Grey Heather, 50 g / 100 m (109 yards) - 1 skein. (B)

Needles: circular 4 (3.5 mm) and 4 (3.5 mm) double-pointed OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE

Gauge: 16 st x 30 rows = 4" x 4" (10 x 10 cm)

Directions
Hat is worked in rounds.
With yarn A cast on 78 sts on circular needles. Join the 1st and the last stitches. Mark the 1st stitch.
Continue to knit in the round rib 1 k, 1 p for 6 rounds.
Round 7: all knit
Round 8: (13 k, 13 p) repeat 6 times.
Round 9: with yarn B all knit
Round 10: (13 p, 13 k) repeat 6 times.
Round 11: with yarn A all knit.
Round 12: (13 k, 13 p) repeat 6 times.
Round 13: with yarn B all knit
Round 14: (13 p, 13 k) repeat 6 times.
Round 15: with yarn A all knit.
Round 16: (13 k, 13 p) repeat 6 times.
Round 17: with yarn B all knit
Round 18: (13 p, 13 k) repeat 6 times.
Round 19: with yarn A all knit.
Round 20: (13 k, 13 p) repeat 6 times.
Round 21: with yarn B all knit
Round 22: (13 p, 13 k) repeat 6 times.
Round 23: with yarn A all knit.
Round 24: (13 k, 13 p) repeat 6 times.
Round 25: with yarn B all knit
Round 26: (13 p, 13 k) repeat 6 times.
Round 27: with yarn A 12 k, (11 k, k2tog) repeat 4 times, 11 k, knit together the last and the 1st stitch.
Round 28: (12 k, 12 p) repeat 6 times.
Round 29: with yarn B 11 k, (10 k, k2tog) repeat 4 times, 10 k, knit together the last and the 1st stitch.
Round 30: (11 p, 11 k) repeat 6 times.
Round 31: with yarn A 10 k, (9 k, k2tog) repeat 4 times, 9 k, knit together the last and the 1st stitch.
Round 32: (10 k, 10 p) repeat 6 times.
Round 33: with yarn B 9 k, (8 k, k2tog) repeat 4 times, 8 k, knit together the last and the 1st stitch.
Round 34: (9 p, 9 k) repeat 6 times.
Round 35: with yarn A knit.
Round 36: (9 k, 9 p) repeat 6 times.
Round 37: with yarn B 8 k, (7 k, k2tog) repeat 4 times, 7 k, knit together the last and the 1st stitch.
Round 38: (8 p, 8 k) repeat 6 times.
Change to dp needles
Round 39: with yarn A 7 k, (6 k, k2tog) repeat 4 times, 6 k, knit together the last and the 1st stitch.
Round 40: (7 k, 7 p) repeat 6 times.
Round 41: with yarn B 6 k, (5 k, k2tog) repeat 4 times, 5 k, knit together the last and the 1st stitch.
Round 42: (6 p, 6 k) repeat 6 times.
Round 43: with yarn A 5 k, (4 k, k2tog) repeat 4 times, 4 k, knit together the last and the 1st stitch.
Round 44: (5 k, 5 p) repeat 6 times.
Round 45: 4 k, (3 k, k2tog) repeat 4 times, 3 k, knit together the last and the 1st stitch.
Round 46: 3 k, (2 k, k2tog) repeat 4 times, 2 k, knit together the last and the 1st stitch.
Round 47: 2 k, (1 k, k2tog) repeat 4 times, 1 k, knit together the last and the 1st stitch.
Round 48: Cut yarn, leaving a 10" (25 cm) tail. Pull through remaining sts and secure.
