Free Cardigan Knitting Pattern
Size: 8/10 (38/40)
Materials: Patons Stretch Socks yarn 239 yds/218 m per 1.75 oz/50 gr skein - 3 skeins. Color: Mineral. (shop for this yarn here!)
Needles: 2 (2.75 mm) OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE
Gauge: 22 st x 28 rows = 4" x 4" (10 x 10 cm)
Stocking Stitch: 1k, 1p
1 row and all odd rows - knit sts
2 row and all even rows - purl sts
Rib 1x1: 1k, 1p
Rib 2x2: 2k, 2p
Cast on 92 sts (including edge stitches).
Rows 1-16: Rib 2x2. In the last row add 20 sts evenly.
Rows 17-90: stocking stitch. Cast off.
Note that the fronts are longer than the back.
Cast on 55 sts (including edge stitches).
Rows 1-16: 46 sts of rib 2x2 and 7 sts of rib 1x1 for the button band. In the last row add 10 sts evenly (65 sts).
Rows 17-50: stocking stitch.
Rows 51-70: decrease for 1 sts in each row to shape a neckline as follows: knit together the 1st st fo the button band with the previous st (7th and 8th sts from the end of the row on the right side). Decrease total for 20 sts.
Rows 71-78: decrease for 1 sts in each odd row to shape a neckline as follows: knit together the 1st st fo the button band with the previous st (7th and 8th sts from the end of the row on the right side). Decrease total for 4 sts.
Rows 79-104: stocking stitch.
Row 105: cast off 34 sts. Continue to knit the button band (now neck band) for 32 rows rib 1x1. Cast off.
Knit as left front
Make button holes in the 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th, 35th, 42nd and 49th rows by yo, k2tog the 3rd and 4th sts of the button band.
Join shoulder seams. Join side seams for 7.5 cm (3") from the bottom.
Pick up 122 sts (including edge sts) along the arm holes.
Knit rib 2x2 for 6 rows. Cast off.
Sew on 7 buttons.
